Original question

A good manual to use the phone in developer mode because if you're a newbie like me you don't now anything about the packages or repositories that are used. Thanks to the community you can find a lot(thanks for that) but a good manual would help a lot of people i think.

For instructions to enable the developer mode, see HowTo: Access command line with root privileges.

Enable Glance screen - Be wary of power usage. Plus, Usual developer mode caveats apply.

It may sound a bit harsh, but as long as you don't know what and how you can do anything in developer mode. It should stay off because it's like playing with a loaded gun without knowing what you are doing (ok, ok you can't kill people but your phone ;)). Most things can be done without activating or needing developer mode.

But to get used how everything works, setup a little virtual machine (CentOS, Fedora) with linux and play around with it on your local pc. So you cannot damage your phone.

@Hans: Since this became a HowTo now, it should be converted to a Wiki.

@jgr How do you convert it to a Wiki?

@Hans when you edit a post, there's a checkbox "community wiki" which turns the post into a wikipost, changed this question to one already.

What you are asking is very general as the SailfishOS is a linux distribution based on Mer/Nemo using the RPM Package Manager and pretty standard terminal toolsets. A hint on where to look or what to look for you will get from the list below, only the part about SSU is SailfishOS/Jolla specific:

there are not many repositories yet and it is not advisable to actiavate any if you are not knowing what it can cause (warehouse/openrepos made Jolla a headache for example)
