[1.0.4.20] How to fix the new UI changes? [not relevant]
asked 2014-03-17 23:13:47 +0300
This post is a wiki. Anyone with karma >75 is welcome to improve it.
I was looking to the new update and I like most of the changes, but one thing has changed for worse: The UI. I was happy with subtleness of Jolla's UI (I was calling it non-invasive when showing it off to others), but this is now partly gone. Here are the main drawbacks:
- pulley menus are too bold and bright - it hurts my eyes to look at screen where they are present
- app background is too dark and does not follow the ambiance color as before
- application covers are too bright - especially in contrast to the dark background. With some ambiances, the conver is so bright that its text is almost unreadable - white on white.
- cover corners are too sharp and seem quite out of place
the keyboard... It was the most beautiful aspect of Sailfish UI, not anymore.
the dots, all the dots, on the UI have been overly boldened, I would understand a bit more boldness, but not this much, it's too intrusive
Can we aggregate solutions how to manually revert these changes? (as answers to this question)
Agree with the app background part. It was better before the update.
Neo ( 2014-03-17 23:17:22 +0300 )editIndeed. Still no osx support and loud notifications that can damage your ears. It looks like Jolla will focus on ringtones, walpapers and battery covers instead of fixing bugs.
cropas ( 2014-03-17 23:23:31 +0300 )editWhat about this "Introduced glass texture background to app covers"? I liked it better before.
Neo ( 2014-03-17 23:43:21 +0300 )edit@Neo Yes I added the comment about brightness and corners. Is that what you mean? Application covers look like the most annoying thing of the new update. It just burns my eyes... And then I realized I already have the brightness on the lowest setting :(
nodevel ( 2014-03-17 23:49:22 +0300 )edityeah, I was asking before the update already about whether we have a chance to roll back the UI settings. Unfortunately no response. https://together.jolla.com/question/32261/will-some-of-the-cosmetic-ui-improvements-in-for-example-the-upcoming-march-update-be-optionalreversible/
spacenewt ( 2014-03-17 23:55:55 +0300 )edit@spanewt Yes, thank you, I already voted on your question few days ago, but I never expected those changes to be that bad.
nodevel ( 2014-03-18 00:01:11 +0300 )edit@nodevel Yes I guess it is the brightness combined with this new texture of the cover (there was no texture before the update) that has changed the covers for the worse IMO.
Neo ( 2014-03-18 00:01:13 +0300 )editI think someone told me to make a backup of /usr/shared/themes with all the icons (someone please correct me if I gave the wrong path. My Jolla is messed up now so I had to revert back to factory setting right now)
spacenewt ( 2014-03-18 00:02:00 +0300 )edit@nodevel Thank you for the vote. I really loved the subtle design of Jolla as well. I thought that was a bold move from them.
spacenewt ( 2014-03-18 00:05:10 +0300 )editKeyboard indeed... makes me sad. Larger radio buttons and pulley edge are ugly. Other visual updates like covers and backgorund are cool.
pilq ( 2014-03-18 00:17:26 +0300 )edit@spacenewt Could you maybe make a backup of Silica components as well? They are placed at /usr/lib/qt5/qml/Sailfish/Silica/ I am trying to play with background opacity, but no luck yet.
nodevel ( 2014-03-18 00:44:19 +0300 )edit@nodevel, sure, thanks for the tip. Keep them coming :)
spacenewt ( 2014-03-18 00:58:02 +0300 )editHmm, I like all the changes mentioned, except the dark app background.
Tanghus ( 2014-03-18 06:21:24 +0300 )editAnd the dark background was fixed by https://together.jolla.com/question/33686/10420-how-to-fix-the-new-ui-changes/?answer=33696#post-id-33696 :)
Tanghus ( 2014-03-18 06:22:53 +0300 )editI suggest you turn this post into a wiki.
I for instance would like to add, that all dots have become stupidly large,
Also I don't really see a difference on the covers' corners, they seem ok to me.
dsilveira ( 2014-03-18 08:20:35 +0300 )editI like the new keyboard. IMHO it's better readable. It was very difficult to use it in direct sunlight previously. I think this should be improved now (can't really say, as it's clouded here currently ;-) ).
naytsyrhc ( 2014-03-18 10:19:59 +0300 )editFully agree with all points mentioned. The UI looks less elegant than before.
argonius ( 2014-03-18 10:25:50 +0300 )editWhat happened to the keyboard? It looks like visual impaired mode has been set to "always on"? Please bring back the original subtility where the choice of ambiance could influence the keyboard! N900 all over again.
vandersmash ( 2014-03-18 10:52:41 +0300 )edit@dsilveira Good idea with the wiki, done. Corners now have no radius at all, there is just a new layer that has some radius, but not like before.
nodevel ( 2014-03-18 11:42:45 +0300 )editI actually don't notice most of the changes, I have no idea in what way app covers were different before. But I LOVE the new keyboard. Suddenly it's much easier to type.
Ozymandias ( 2014-03-18 11:44:49 +0300 )editI'll have to disagree with all the opinions mentioned in the op, except for the dark background in apps. I like the new changes, especially the, now much clearer, keyboard which I'm using while typing this. Somehow easier now? Sorry I'll have to downvote this question 'cause I don't want these improvements to be undone.
tapio.oling ( 2014-03-18 21:27:44 +0300 )edit@tapio.oling: The dark background is apparently a bug that can be fixed by switching to another ambiance and back again. See the answer below.
Tanghus ( 2014-03-18 21:56:15 +0300 )editAs a designer I appreciate most of the UI changes and I have to disagree with all the mentioned negative feedback above. Most of the changes are improvements of the usability (bigger fonts in keyboard layout, better recognition for all the input buttons, etc) and should not be undone.
swiss_m4mpfi ( 2014-03-18 22:20:59 +0300 )edit@tapio.oling@swiss_m4mpfi This post like other related posts on UI changes, the point is NOT to undo the changes but giving the user options instead of treading the changes over our heads and tell us all to just like it. I would assume that Jolla fans are not like let's say iOS-fanboys who simply _loves_ whatever Apple tells them to love (and this critic coming from me who swears to Mac computers, only not too keen on iPhone/iPad). Jolla is unlike also in the sense that the community, i.e. us, all have a say. While we may disagree on what we personally prefer, we must be still able to talk about it. Yes?
spacenewt ( 2014-03-18 22:54:17 +0300 )editHmm .. if I must make decision between "elegance" or "ergonomic" GUI .. then I vote for ergonomic.
I have LCD bright always set to low. I want better contrast. I want possibility to set clear black background for all apps ... not awesome non-ergonomic unreadable transparent .. something. :)
Will be good open this part to community for some good hacks.
Kaacz ( 2014-03-18 23:07:54 +0300 )editcould someone add screenshots to this? because frankly i cant say there is that much of a difference... or i cant see any. except for the cover corners, there i can see what was changed and i dont quite like it but believe that will be fixed in the next update
mlatu ( 2014-03-19 16:41:25 +0300 )editMy vote goes especially to pulley menu being too bold and bright. Even slight change towards old one:
made it way better, but I really hope some real Graphic Designer tunes pulley indicator right for next update, current is way too bold and bright. So called out of the box experience is important, but we should not sacrifice everyday usage, which is even more important. (Today nobody wants 'Yes' 'No' 'Cancel' buttons anymore even they were probably important at that time for first time users) IMO Elegance vs Annoyeance should be considered in Jolla UI design and emphasis should go to elegant everyday usage. @mlatu if you mean tweaks mentioned below by @DataGhost for example. You need reboot after editing those settings to see the difference.
