Nokia Drive is one of the best offline turn-by-turn gps navigation systems out there, and it comes for free. The Jolla Maps app is based on the same framework (HERE Maps from Nokia), so I'd really like it to be fully usable in offline mode (ability to download maps for specific countries to device and have turn-by-turn voice navigation). This is essential when traveling abroad or in low-signal areas where mobile data connection is not available/too expensive, and I hope it is already on your roadmap.

Edit 11.5.2014: Answer "We're thinking about it :)" has been here for a while (since the Christmas). A lot of votes both to the question, comments and the answer. Any updates, Jolla? Worth a roadmap tag?

Edit 06.10.2014: There are another 207 votes on this related wiki post

Edit 19.5.2014: Cloud-based HERE services like synchronisation (via Nokia or even Jolla Account?) of favourite places and routes should also be implemented.

Edit 7.7.2015: Quotation from answer suggested s correct, the time gap mentioned is 6 months ago: "We aspire to offer this feature in the shortest time possible, however I don't see any possibility at the moment that this would materialize in a native form at least until next January."- Removed correct answer tag for this, looking forward for an update to the answer

I wouldn't mind to pay for this up to 10€ for the app and extra money for offline maps. Like for example europe for 50€. Or DACH for 25€. Have a look at Sygic shop for price comparisions.

I also wouldn't mind to pay some for offline maps. Would be super handy when you're abroad and have no data connection or don't want to pay criminal charges for data roaming.

Nokia Drive is not free. Those phones getting it without separate payment have the price included into phone price. I agree this feature is needed. Smartphone while roaming is too often useless as "every" software requires data connection.

This is definately needed feature in the Maps app of Jolla. Priority should be given to turn-by-turn voice navigation (to make maps usable while driving), and then the ability to download maps for a spesific country for example for offilne use.

Good, that Jolla is already thinking about this ;)

I'm ready to pay reasonable price for the offline maps feature.

Two of the three routers they use, MapQuest Open and OSRM, are available in Poor Maps as well.

Following up on this, I see now that the HERE maps is available for all android phones and now also for apple devices. It offers offline maps on both, turn by turn navigation if driving and also offers directions using public transit (if in one of the supported cities) - and all of this for FREE. Since literally every major platform has it for free, is there any reason Sailfish cant get it now? I know license costs were an issue before, but its free to the world now. Can Jolla not get these permissions from HERE (Nokia) and build these features into the native maps app?

As with others, I have the android version of here maps installed, but I would really really love to use the native version more. However because I have limited data allowance and use public transport (in London), I find myself using the android version of HERE much more than native maps.

If would be awesome if someone from the Jolla team can provide an update.

build these features into the native maps app?

Jolla did address this once before - the Maps application is not Nokia HERE. It is a 3rd party (Appello) application that uses HERE positioning services, which gives Sailfish access to map data and rich location information - but not to any navigation data or services. So it isn't simply a question of adding functionality to the existing app.

So it isn't simply a question of updating the code a bit.

And Appello have abandoned HERE for their mapping applications, now preferring OpenStreetMap, so I suspect we won't find them updating Maps either.

Unfortunately, exactly this app (which worked fine since the glory Symbian days) seems to have a compatibility issue with the Alien Dalvik layer in Sailfish on Jolla 1 wit the latest update: https://together.jolla.com/question/148900/here-wego-update-2010806-doesnt-install-on-jolla-1/

Previous version still works well though. Its available via the APK site.

Here WeGo is a pretty good navigation app indeed, but this topic is mostly people asking these features for the native navigation app "Maps" and I don't undestand why this has been selected as the correct answer. These features has been asked (and still missing) since the launch event of the first Jolla Phone in the end of 2013 and suggesting using Android apps doesn't help those who haven't or can't install Alien Dalvik on their phone (like users of community ports of SFOS).

Please stop marking your own answers as "correct", unless it was you who asked the original question.

OSM Scout Server is a possible alternative for offline maps and routine to HERE maps, and to Google Maps "Save to SD card" feature. Its data usage on the uSD card is about the same as Google Maps.

It's a server (using data from open street maps) that locally run inside your phone and can be used as a possible source for maps, for routing and for search results in a few software - currently supported as a source in Poor Maps and modRana.

Another solution is navit, a satnav software optimized for smartphones. It can use several types of maps, among other from open street maps.

Its data usage on the uSD card is lower than OSM Scout Server and Google Maps.

IMO, this feature request is obsolete (since H2/2017):

  • The SailfishOS native apps ModRana (from Jolla Store or OpenRepos) and Poor Maps are both quite capable and work nicely with offline map data locally provided by OSM Scout Server.

  • The Android app OSMand~ (from F-Droid app store) is much more feature rich than Here Maps / Here WeGo Maps.

As this question is about a native app, I think your point with OSMand is not valid. However I agree, that current implementation of OSM Scout server with poor maps gl from openrepos is a very capable solution.
