Open source the email client

Please open source the email client!

The email client, like the now open sourced browser, is a core feature of a smart phone, and right now it needs a lot of help and development. If it were open sourced, people could start working on their favorite grievances and move it forwards much quicker. I believe a high quality Sailfish-specific email client would be very valuable for Jolla.

It's time to get an usable email client! Is somebody at Jolla working on it to make it open source? Or have we to wait for features until the Jolla phone no. 1 is history?

This email-client still is a email-patient and makes me sick too.

Majority of the code is open source(~90%), major parts:

MW: https://github.com/nemomobile-packages/messagingframework

QML plugins: https://github.com/nemomobile/nemo-qml-plugin-email

The UI elements are not atm, see this for more info and clarifications on that: https://together.jolla.com/question/3014/clarification-of-open-source-policy/#post-id-6768

Contributions are welcome :)

That is great! However, I think many improvements of the email client would need access to the UI code. My biggest show stopper for the email client is that it automatically downloads in-line images in emails. To turn that off I need a manual override in the UI for emails where I do wish to see the pictures. This is used to validate my email to spammers, and I have a lot of spam issues. See: https://together.jolla.com/question/3758/mail-application-ask-to-load-images-in-email

For such an app like email, it's all or nothing. Why should I bother if I cannot access the full code? My problem also has to do with the UI. (But thanks for your meaningful answer incl. links, very appreciated)

Email is one of the apps I'd really like to see 100% Open Source

As the image loading problem described above Mar 19 '14 has been fixed, is there still some problems? So, could this even be closed as answered by @VDVsx?

This issue is not about a single specific bug, this is about giving coders the access they need to improve the email client. For example, I would like to add GPG-encryption, and there are many, many other features that open-source coders could add if given the chance. Also it is about letting independent coders validate that the email client isn't doing the wrong thing, either intentionally or by mistake.
