well, here is my thoughts: the other half idea is really great, but what if i want to use several other halfs - well, i will have to switch them, so why not to create like a standart for "the other quarter", so we can mix different functionalities simulteniously. The upper "other quater" will have output pins which will connect to Jolla and also input pins which will connect it to lower "other quarter". So, what do you think, sailors?

update: let me add something. Surely i was thinking about Motorolla, when i was writing this post. But the thing is that you can't actually split it indefenitely, half of the quarter is already pretty small and i guess most of the hardware for TOHs will be taking much space (battery, keyboard, charger, etc). And also you can't add more RAM or another processor. So, no, idea is not to create blockphone, but in a way is very similar.

the idea is nice, but I personally prefer to see stackable TOH first (like for example battery TOH + HWKB).

The stackable design would allow for more modules to be used simultaneously, that if I understand it correctly is your desire

stackable in what way? one over another? or like phoneblocks? anyway most modules will be to big for phoneblocks paradigm. And stacking one over another will make phone pretty think, no? PS why you even need battery TOH? Battery is replacable, you can just carry another battery on yourself :D

yes, stackable one over another (up to 2 TOH)

battery TOH was just an example

Also a nice idea, but the phone would become very thick! Furthermore nearly all TOHs have to have the design and pins/bus to support an additional TOH.

(Edit: extracted a text part and put in again as answer to the OP)

The idea behind is nice, but if it were to be done the way you describe it:

"The upper other quater will have output pins which will connect to Jolla and also input pins which will connect it to lower "other quater",

I don't think it would make for a very nice experience using the phone, I imagine it constantly breaking into pieces!

However, if we go the way @Anz suggested, than I'm totally in agreement!

It could be like JollaBlocks: a double-heighted TOH with a common i2C bus, power, etc, and several places to hook hw features to. This would not only be robust, but also allow for having several (more than 2 at least) features available, and being able to interchange them, to whatever combination we desire!

the external cover could remain one piece. the idea is to compartmentalize the inner part of TOH to standard regions. this will involve categorizing the compartments based on functionality.. or a data and dc bus branching out into different compartments. every TOH dev tries to minimize the space taken by their components.. standard wiring scheme etc. looks difficult, but can be done with some coordination :)

i imagine that it won't break into peaces. why it should? they should clip to each other, so it will be okay

can you tell us any examples of HW, that you thinking about which could be connected to JollaBlocks? Besides any kind of sensors.

virgi26 ( 2014-03-27 09:16:19 +0300 )edit

@virgi26 I imagine anything from sensors, like you said, to nfc chip, wireless charging pad...

The limit is your imagination!

Can Jolla partner with Phonebloks? So not every blocked phone has to be an android phone?

(an addition to my comment some lines above)

I would prefer to have a template TOH which can be used to cover/contain many small TOH-ideas. So why not have one TOH with capabilities for different small modules inside? So you can pick these modules you want to have and plug them in (and maybe cutout the TOH for plugin-interaction).

Another suggestion: Jolla may support this with a site for hardware references and specifications (Open Hardware)?

Edit: typo, +suggestion
