Since a few days my Gmail stopped synchronizing automatically. My Gmail account is added as a Google account in the settings app and I have Instant messaging, Email and Sync selected there. When I choose to manually sync in the email app with the pulley menu it works perfectly though. My Exchange account syncs fine both automatically and manually.

@tweek - It never syncs ? did you checked if the automatic sync setting is enabled under: Settings->Apps->Mail ?

No, it does not automatically sync at all anymore. Unfortunately I cannot check the settings under Settings->Apps->Mail because the settings app crashes and closes when I try to open that. Every other setting is available except for Mail. Under Settings->Accounts->Gmail it is set to sync Email though. This is what journalctl reports when I try to open the Settings->Apps->Email http://pastebin.com/gTdMxJYD

That seems to have solved the problem. I only noticed later that the mail settings were unavailable and I thought they were 2 different issues, so I only tried a search on the updates. I do not have any external repos enabled at all, this bug started around the time where my device ran out of RAM. All the apps crashed and after a blackscreen + red inidicator light it automatically recovered.

No idea why this file got empty, in your case did you modified or installed any app related to Sync from external repos ?
