Hello Sailors! Here is pretty simple question for you: have you managed to convince any of your friends or collegues or whatever, who actually never heard about Jolla before, to switch to it? What were the major difficulties while taliking with your friends about it? I know every one of us tried to do it. You can write about your experience on this subject in comments and please vote, so we could get some numbers.

This is a Poll question, so please tick the "Community Wiki" checkbox when posting an Answer to this Question.

Due to my age, my friends see a mobile phone for what it is; something to make calls with and to send the occasional text.

When I showed a few friends the Jolla and what it couldn't do, I was the laughing stock for about 5 minutes until we all needed our oxygen tanks to breathe, bearing in mind this was OS 1.0.0.5 (the beginning).

If anything, the phone didn't raise any eyebrows, but created plenty of frowny faces, as to why I had spent so much money on an incomplete phone! (They didn't quite understand the bit about development by the user).

The best part about the phone for my friends, is you can change its appearance with new TOH's, until I told them how much they were, now one of my friends is still recovering in hospital, after laughing himself into an asthma attack!

I got given a Samsung Galaxy S2 with a broken USB port (repaired for £7) and installed a stable version of Cyanogenmod. The screen is bright, the phone is functional and above all, it does what you ask of it and to be honest, I like it!, it all works!

A friend still uses his immaculate Nokia N8 (he won't part with it), which if we are honest, the only thing that really lets that phone down, is the OS, otherwise, it's a cracking camera, then the USB OTG, the HDMI out, all nice features. Even the S2 will output video with the right cable! (MHL).

It's Nokia or Samsung for the majority of my friends, who got their phones on contract back in the days of Jesus and refuse to upgrade, because and I quote; "I like my little phone, it's very reliable and I know how to use it". (Wow, I sounds like an old fart!!, I'm mid 40's, not so old, eh?) :D

I'm selling my Jolla, it was bought with money I didn't have, I've had the experience (been, seen, done it) so I will repay my debt from Jolla proceeds, maybe a friend might like to buy it, but I doubt that very much, that will be like trying to sell sand to Arabs.

Right, all jokes and japes aside, I quite like my Jolla, but not enough to be keeping hold of it, it's going on eBay this week! I noticed one went for £320.00, 'The First One' edition, which mine is. Minus the stickers, which are now hiding dents on my mountain bike and fridge and of course, my t-shirt is well worn already, but the Jolla is still immaculate, so off to auction it is!

wow, it's really sad :( i'm myself actually convinced my friend to switch from Iphone 5. She liked gesture-based interface and TOH technology. Although i also have couple of friends with "what the hell is this crap?" attitude =\

  • co-workers like the gesture UI and full screen without bar notification and discrete notifications.

  • my part: too many things not yet working/ready exposed at another topic, This just final beta 1.0.4.20 and not release for my self as end user. version 1.0.4.20 mostly a smartphone for closed group developers level, linux fans, not for end user like user came from SymbianOS S3 Belle on Nokia N8-00 (too many things can doing only at developer mode but should interest user level !)

Still a lot of works before reach more generic customers.

Sometime, i think the SailfishOS/software are mostly used only at developer mode and almost not tested as user level by developer

I think the 'poll' here is a bit out of hand as the answers are more like commentary than actual options to vote for. In my case a few are interested, but a definite and big blocker is the fact it doesn't work with a Mac (really bad for me too). Also the size is a turnoff for some. Apps I have found to be less of an issue.

Practically it's nothing to add to previous answers. After 1.0.4.20 i use Jolla as my main phone, but the only why i don't shift back on N9 it's because i have corporate WP8 Lumia in parallel. N9 is still the best, current combination is just temporary solution to play with other technologies. i hoped Jolla will be my next main - nope so far. Will wait till late summer and see then.

Yes, i demonstrated Jolla to some of my friends, they are interesting and positive to UI concepts. But even more they are interesting in reliability - basic phone functions and apps (no one cares that's native Sailfish or Android ones) they use day-to-day shall work as expected from user mode, without workarounds, patchs in config through developer mode, etc.

One more point, i don't recommend people things i personally like, maximum could inform them about such. In case of Jolla that means if someone purchase the device based on my recommendations and he will be disappointed i simply return him e400 to keep good relationships. Try to avoid such situations.

someone with iphone3g was interested in buying one. but after i explained what is not working and what have to be done before you have basic things running he lost all interest.

the NO came after: no, you can't sync with your mac. average user don't know sftp and don't want to put SD-card in mac to transfer music. apple/iPhone user are used to working things. so there has to be a possibility to sync all your stuff: calendar, music, contacts etc. easily.

plus: native browser is unusable.

calddav is missing.

real copy, paste, cut.

ect.

if you are used to an iphone where everything just works and dont want to get rid of icloud and apple, then there is no reason to switch. the second reason is to have someting you have to get working. but after that you are still missing too many things.

I'm not a missionary man, so to speak, and thus I will show Jolla to those who wish to try it out but that's it. The best thing going for Jolla for me, in addition to a very usable and non NSA compliant OS, is the battery life compared to at least to Android and iOS devices.

Mind you, I like to try various operating systems, especially if they share the ideology of F/OSS. Thus I am not interested in Android, Windows or iOS. At the moment I also have a phone with FirefoxOS and I will be trying out mobile version of Ubuntu once it is released with or... in a device. I could also try out some of the open source versions of Android - Gyanogenix?

I know that Nexus would be cheaper as wouldn't have to purchase device for each of the OS', but I like to support the companies that make an effort in diversifying the mobile OS market. At the moment, Jolla and SailfishOS, provide me with everything I need.

The only bad thing I can think of right now is that Jolla store doesn't support software written in Python. Hence the users are missing out on some essential software that Maemo devices could offer (for instance gPodder!) Also the support for Webapps (Gecko + HTML5 + js + css) would be appreciated to deploy applications from FirefoxOS and Ubuntu.

In short, I haven't even tried to convert anyone.

One of my co-workers asked me if he should get a Jolla phone. I told many things about Jolla, pros and cons. Also tried to be honest and told that maybe Jolla is not ready for all at the moment. He bought Jolla anyway and guess what, he likes the Jolla phone!

I am not trying to "sell" Jolla phone to my friends or co-workers. If someone is interested, I tell and show how it works and where to get more information.

Seems to be the case, that the more people know about the company (Jolla Oy), Jolla people and the Jolla community, the more they like the phone. We tend to like the story behind. A small company jumping off "the burning platform", working day and night to get Jolla and Sailfish ready, having a enthusiastic community supporting them, etc.

I'm using my Jolla as my main phone and for me it does what it should.

I think technically it would be alright for average Joe, too.

But I think there are mainly two things that'll keep him away from Jolla:

  1. For me the price was alright because I wanted a phone with an OS similar to Sailfish. Average Joe- who just want's a working device and wouldn't care about the OS- will find that an Android device at about 200 EUR will do the same for him as the Jolla at 400 EUR.

  2. Average Joe can touch and buy the android device at his local electronic/phone store (or a web store that underlies his countries law). And he can bring it in there if there is a problem with the device. I wouldn't have bought my Jolla, too, if there was a phone I expected to satisfy my needs offered by a store in my own country.

I think beside the technical view these are the two things Jolla has to work on if they want to reach average Joe. Availability at local stores/web shops and a target price that could compete against comparable android devices.

I was going to comment that I just got my wife a Jolla for Christmas and she is an average Jane as far as technology is concerned - but then I realuzed that hey, she has a geek in the house! ;)

Having said that, I think that at least past 1.0.8.x, the OS is mature enough for the general public use. The availability of applications is a different thing. I hear you can run Android apps on it to bridge the gap but I do not and would not use it myself so cannot comment.

Wouldn't it be easier to convince those who have fallen out of love with their Androids or iPhones instead of targetting those crazy in love? My loved ones are eagerly waiting to replace their phones with a (slightly smaller) jolla one. ...and that is just a matter of time now (fingers crossed).

The short answer: NO.
The longer answer:
- My Wife hates it, as the indicator lights blinks at night.
- My colleagues (mobile software developers) laughs at it.
- I used it as my main phone from January until mid-march. Now I am back on my iPhone.

The main reasons are:

  • It never managed to connect to the wlan at work (ALL other phones never had any problems - we are using an apple airport time capsule)
  • It needs a reboot every week. (my iPhone NEVER needs a reboot..)
  • The browser is terrible
  • Android support is unstable/unfinished/slow scrolling. iPhone apps are better than the android ones anyway ... and native Sailfish apps are few and far between
  • In iOS, I can easily say that a particular app should not use mobile data. I only have 250 MB/month, and so this missing functionality really irritates me.
  • no support for apple services such as photo stream, syncing of contacts, etc..
  • its not easy to sync it with my mac with an USB cable.
  • The development environment (QT creator) is really a looong way behind Xcode, I especially miss the "Analyze code" feature that automatically finds bugs for you.

I don't know about that Apple stuff, but I in my opinion the browser is really good (ok, the UI sucks, but performance-wise) now after U10 and Android's Firefox is also really smooth on Jolla. I haven't had almost any problems with the Android support. It seems that you haven't used the latest software versions as you switched to iPhone.

I am known as a bit of a phone freak at work so nobody pays much attention to frequency of changes anymore. A couple of eyebrows were raised that I had preordered a mobile last year. Majority of my colleagues are switching to Windows strangely enough. Those that I have shown my Jolla to can see the potential for the UI but if you have only used Android or iOS it does seem complicated. As a previous N9 user it took a couple of hours to get fully used to it. As mention above, the browser does need work, not so much in display but in handling transitions and tabs, also moving back a page seems to confuse it a bit. Video playback is rough, more controls are definitely needed and it murders the battery. Notifications are good but it would be nice to have Google+ support for this. My wife wants a Jolla and I did have a collegue wavering for a while until he went for a Lumia 1520, he wanted the camera and video functionality. I will stick with Jolla though, Android and iOS are prehistoric from a design / efficiency perspective and I always used to describe Windows mobile as a kind of Maemo light. We all know a mobile OS is not created overnight and I exceptionally pleased at the progress so far. I had a play with a Samsung G5 earlier today and while it is impressive from a hardware point of view, it did not excite me from a useability front that the Jolla does. I am using Jolla as my only mobile device but I am missing Hangouts video and my kobobooks library. Basic mobile functionality is perfect i.e voice and texting, IM is good, email is good, maps are a step back verses N9 or Android 4.2/3, music media is excellent, video is poor, browsing needs work. So as it stands to me right now, Jolla is perfectly viable as a individual low to mid range mobile. The easiest way to sell Jolla is that Sailfish is not owned by a big data company. Privacy and the right to it is getting to be a big deal.

No, still not.

I think Sailfish OS is still a beta but of course it's much more a phone for the people than it was some weeks ago. When people asks I usually tells a lot of the Jolla story and it catches a lot of interest, maybe it could be my ridiculously large enthusiasm for the Jolla company.

Most of my friends has asked a lot of questions about the phone, mostly because my I´m the first one t-shirt... In fact a lot of them seems to be a little impressed af the phone but the main answer is "It seems to be a little bit to complicated for me". I don't think it is, maybe they don't get the entire experience as I find so nice, It's much harder to find some motivation for them to buy a new phone when they don't think they need a new one.

I really like my Jolla, I don't think it's hard to adapt other ways to use a phone, skip some of my old doings or things like that as I had to do in the beginning, it was harder for my friends or family to for example use e-mail instead of MMS (my mom is pretty happy now when MMS works, she never felt comfortabe to open pictures through mail in her phone, but of course she wanted pics of her granddaughter...). I'm not an advanced user but like to try tweaks and stuff much more than any one I know except my brother, but he needed a new phone very quick so he had to buy another before the Jollas was for sale.

According to my experiences, the gestures would still need some work. For example, the fade out effect when swiping the active application to the switcher is just too confusing. The notification area is confusing. These might not be confusing to us (geeks), but it certainly is to "normal" people. When I gave my Jolla to my gf (who is actually also a software engineer), first thing she said was "Wtf happened? What did I do?".
