What codecs (audio or video) are hardware accelerated?

What is the total list of encoders and decoders for either audio or video that are accelerated by the Jolla hardware? Which codecs activate the hardware acceleration?

I believe that the built-in video recorder records in h.263(sic!) for video and AAC for audio. I assume those formats have hardware acceleration. Am I right about this?

If there is someone within Jolla that has the definite answer to this, that would be great!

If anyone has any idea at all about this, we can at least collect what we guess is true here.

EDIT: There is this link: http://reviewjolla.blogspot.dk/2014/01/workaround-jolla-rotation-and-video.html , but it is still limited to what the video recorder is currently doing (same as already mentioned above). @rainisto is from Jolla, and seems to have some info on this (as mentioned in the link presented by @chemist, in the comments).

@rainisto: Do you happen to have an answer to this? Could you perhaps dig out a list of codecs supported by the hardware acceleration of the Jolla?

We record in MPEG4 not H263

HW accelerated codecs (for Jolla phone only) are: MPEG4 video, H264 and H263 We use SW audio codecs which are not HW accelerated.

MPEG4 is a container format, not a codec. Depending on it's Part it can support different codecs, which could be for example H.264 (since Part 10). Also in my understanding Jolla records video using H.263 codec, and saves the video+audio to an mp4 container. could you check and update?

It's MPEG4 alright, but merely Simple Profile. Even XviD is more advanced... Why doesn't the camera record in AVC?

@Fuzzilogic: Does Jolla have enough money to pay MPEG LA the licensing fee for using the (patented) AVC codec?

Maybe some tablet orders might be helpful for that :D

Still, @MSameer can you please update your answer. Data above confirms the H.263

simo ( 2015-09-03 19:52:23 +0300 )edit

@simo: I would be greatly surprised if Jolla breaks even on their tablets, let alone makes a profit. The volumes they are selling are just too low to cover their costs...
