Using the pulley menu without looking requires counting the clicks/vibrations. While counting to four isn't very difficult having different sounds for each item could be faster and more intuitive.

Pitch is propably the least obtrusive way to do this. (Although you can create nice harmonies and such.)

Here is a quick mockup: Click (Test using the pulley menu while listening to this.)

Number of clicks indicates the position. One click for the first item, two clicks for the second item ...

Mockup with number of clicks and pitch: Clicks (Idea by Stefanix)

Speech synthesis reads out the items. Used as a accessibility feature or just as a way to navigate pulley menus never needing to look at the screen

Completely different sounds Why would you do that?

Good idea, but I am not sure if it's easy to connect the pitch with an item position. I suggest, maybe as an addition to pitch, to play one click/vibration for the first position, two for the second, and so forth.

Very interesting idea, one vote from me!!! It would sort of trigger the mind to think about counting the items if each of them had a different pitch.

Added the great idea by @Stefanix to the mix! Made a quick mockup and it worked better than I originally thought.
