Developers! I am disapointed??! [subjective]

The phone is not what i expected, to many imperfections In the first annoncments i understood that the sailfisch Os would be the improvement of the nokia N9. But it is a hole new phone. To many bugs. I hope that you take as base the N9 to further developments. It was and stil is a verry good phone the N9. The interface of the Jolla is wonderfull, however this is not what make a good phone. There is a lot of work to do and i hope that it will be performed in the near future. A very important part of a phone is the managment of people. Well that is very poor in the Jolla. Bad synchronization whit google or outlook also bluetooth sync. is poor. No groups as there are friends, family, sportclubs, e.o., so there is the possibility to send sms, e-mail and photos.

My mother tongue is dutch, why there is no dutch language available? I see a lot of other languages ho are not more spoken as dutch.

I wish you a lot of energy, and i hope very shorty to see a lot of improvements.?

You have to understand that the phone (the OS basically) is more or less still in "beta". Improvements are coming on a monthly basis.

I'm half tempted to close this as too argumentative... it sounds like this post belongs in a user forum. FWIW, nobody ever said that Jolla or Sailfish was going to be "based on the Nokia N9".

Guess this is more the kind of post that should be filed under "angry, badly spelled rants" and not under questions. I suggest we don't initiate a flaming contest here, its not really worth it.

I wish you a lot of energy, and i hope very shorty to see a lot of improvements.?

Oh, and I guess these kinds of posts would be rewarding and energizing for the developers?

I actually thought the same about Jolla "would be the improvement of the nokia N9" even if I tried to follow every bit of news I could find about it. I used to be an N9 user. Other than that your frustration could be marked as a duplicate ;) I'm still optimistic that this will be a better phone within' a couple of months.

Hi Marc,

First let me address your last remark. A Dutch language pack is, in a very, very alpha state, available for download at the Warehouse. But don't expect anything feature complete. Otherwise you'll be again disappointed. You could contribute yourself by reviewing the translation at https://www.transifex.com. Discover there the unofficial Jolla translations, among them a Dutch version.

Allow me, however, a more general remark. The Jolla Sailors made it clear from the beginning that the Sailfish project was their main focus, not the phone, and that they would need the support of the community for improving the OS itself, the hardware and the generic Sailfish apps. It's a small company with still limited resources. Bear that in mind.

I can relate to some of your irritation as I am not a techie but a mere supporter of the idea behind Sailfish. I'd like working office applications, stable wifi and 3/4 G-connections, and an ecosystem to add features making a phone easy to use on day to day basis. The Nokia Lumia served me well in that respect. However, I decided to give Jolla a try knowing that it'll be an adventure. I dislike some of the "fan boy" noise but I do understand that you need to make some noise to be heard among the chorus of big names.

Help the community to improve by addressing specific problems you encounter and have a look around. JollaTogether in itself is quickly turning into a huge knowledge base with many answers to known or new problems. Cheers.

Hi Vera, Thanks for your answer. I am using the jolla phone since begin december. In the very beginning and later on, I saw Marc Dillon and others always whit a nokia N900 demonstrating the phone whit the jolla sailfisch Os. Maybe I did not understand all. But my conclusion was that the main goal was the continuation of the MeeGo Harmattan os. Therefore i was expecting a smartphone beter or even whit the nokia N9.

I would like to add my opinion also. As long as I use Linux OSs for a long time already, I expected something very stable and reliable, and as I picked up from DevTool virtual Sailfish phone - it is - (except for systemd - that was real mistake).

But developers, which are mostly programmers are not managers, and they probably did not understand that ONE phone wont give enough money to survive. What Jolla should do and MUST do very quickly is to develop working SailfishOS for other devices AND SALE it. Because it is very important to draw as much customer as possible - this is your bright future. A lot of people tired of adroid and macs - they desperately need very customizable open OS. But you do not do it - you play with NFS and other useless stuff. I do not even think that Jolla devs officially are going to port Sailfish OS to other phones.

That is what REALLY disappoint me and probably many others.

@SD_Lucas: Isn't that exactly what Jolla is doing currently? See e.g. this question where someone is complaining that Jolla concentrates too much on porting the OS to other phones...

I do not know what and how do Jolla developers concentrate on, but the result also disappoints - works only UI to showoff

@MarcG: I guess many understand your position and frustration - In fact I myself moved back to my N9 as primary phone a few days ago, dropping my Jolla to "experimental status" ...

I wouldn't support blaming "developers" in general for the current situation - in fact I'm pretty happy with the App situation, as pretty much most of what I need is available and working pretty nicely ...

What I'm not so happy of is the performance of Jolla as a company. Although I really appreciate a great job in launching a new phone ecosystem with an encouragingly fresh and unlike concept I'm still struggling with quite a few aspects, e.g.

  • I read everywhere, that we're no longer in beta while my WiFi is not really working and I have >10 reboots per week
  • no commercial App store .. I can't see many explanations for this situation as it could have been developed/launched in parallel to ongoing work on hardware and OS, helping to attract commercially oriented developers
  • very little communication on anything similar to being a roadmap/timeline

Maybe this post is not really fitting into the goals of TJC but it may help supporters to get a little rid of their frustration (as long as we all stick to a decent way of writing) ... I've decided to follow my own Linux desktop approach also for Jolla. I started with Ubuntu some 10 years ago and stayed patient and interested until now Linux has finally reached a really usable status for standard desktop users (hoping I don't have to wait such long with Jolla and no, I don't want to start a desktop thread here ....).

Still being fascinated of my Jolla phone ....

I'm not trying to argue what any of you said, but as a long time SW developer, I just want to point out other view on Beta status and stability problems and show my understanding to Jolla crew.
It might just be that Jolla was in impression that quality of platform and apps was almost there to justify dropping Beta (maybe with external pressure to do that). Releases pre 1.0.4.20 were very stable for me, but after installing this latest 1.0.4.20, many different problems started to surface. Not immediately, but in daily active use in various conditions. That includes for example pixelaltion, red led blinking fast, reboots etc, never seen before. I tracked down pretty reliably many of those to one main (area) - connectivity. Especially when device was doing losing WLAN connectivity while possibly syncing with online service (mail, whatsapp etc) at the same time. That led, directly or indirectly, to number of seemingly different problems, where actually they had the same root which is IMG running out of resources (memory, irq younameit?) finally leading to reboot.

After reporting long lists of my findings and conclusions in other post, and running into almost daily boots while hunting this connectivity problems I have now almost 5 days uptime, just by closing apps every now and then and keeping 'online' apps minimum while i'm longer periods in bad coverage area.

So it really can be so that one or few small fixes in layers that handles connections (connman etc) and few applications, might change Jolla experience totally, deserving be out of beta. From stability point of view at least. For me also feature vise, but any other opinion on that is equally good depending on preferences.

And how hard it is to most anxious fans to keep in mind, Jolla has been on sale 5 months, has crew bit over 100 people and not even all from them are developers. Personally I hope Jolla would make 'corporate by-laws' that over 75% of the staff must be developers or other technical professionals to avoid miserable corporate 'viscosity' when they grow. What a sales argument!

Best you can do to help Jolla is point and vote for findings of bugs and missing features, give constructive feedback, develop applications (for example mitakuuluu and tweetian are pretty dam cool already) and what everybody can do spread the word and show Jolla love. I also use to correct misinformation in forums I happen to visit.

Hi, I've been on the open-source side for many years and I also followed the development of e.g. Ubuntu from the very early beginning (still have an original Ubuntu 05.04 CD) until now. Please don't compare the desktop-Linux world with the mobile-Linux world - they're on different pace! Maemo and MeeGo wasn't just great as we see it now over night! Remember that the Jolla launch was in late November. Little over 4 months have past and how dynamic Jolla has reacted to the general feedback is quite impressive in my opinion! Also, there has been a lot of things implemented from our feedback so far. Personally I have not had any very negative moments with my Jolla's (I got a second Jolla from my work place but I don't work for Jolla and have nothing in common with Jolla beside being a follower...perhaps a little fan as well)! Some crashes had happened and yes just on the day of the last update I screwed up my Jolla completely since I enabled the “wrong” repositories. The very same evening the Jolla guy's (Marc Dillon personally) helped me out with instructions via social media. I've big respect for that and I cannot say that any “cooperation” or “global player” would ever do this! I got my phone back into operational stage and finally I was able to update it normally. So comparing my Jolla to my N9 or my N950, the MeeGo project was left alone with 3 big bugs: 1st the messaging bug (sometimes SMS were not received or send – a pretty bad bug – DropCache-app might help), 2nd sudden battery drop...depending on the N9/N950 and 3rd the annoying gallery bug (I'm still trying to fix that on my N950...when I have time). Unfortunatly, there is no support at all for MeeGo and I love MeeGo but that's the reality. Sorry, I cannot use N9 or N950 anymore as primary or secondary phone – I still love them but they are in my museum! Regards, M.
