I have a contact with just a company name and a postcode. However is shows in the people application under someone's name not linked to that company in any way. If I go to edit there is no field with that name in it either so i cannot delete the name field. So where is it getting this information from?

This is due to a bug which occurred in 1.0.3.X update. In some circumstances, saving a contact could result in a different contact's display label being stored for it (in particular, if the given contact has no name data).
This was fixed for 1.0.4.X update, but because the erroneous display label has already been saved into that contact, in your case, you will need to modify the contact and add either a name or a nickname, and re-save it, in order for the erroneous display label data to be recognised and a removed, so that a new display label can be generated for it from that nickname.
