Fetch the update

First to the first ones

The software update will be first available to our dear users owning "The First One" covers. The rest of our user base will be able to update their devices on the same day, but a few hours later.

Heads up: Android apps will be reinstalled

The Android runtime upgrade will reinstall the Android apps on your device. You will see a visual indication (spinning on the app icons) in the launcher area. The app icons may get re-arranged after the re-installation. Your data however should remain intact.

Pre-requisites

  • Working Jolla account configured on your device.
  • Charger connected
  • Device connected to WLAN

If you are unable to successfully configure the account, please visit account.jolla.com and try to reset your password.

Users running software version < 1.0.4.20

If your device is running software version lower than 1.0.4.20 and have WareHouse app installed (i.e you are using OpenRepos), disable all openrepo repositories before attempting to upgrade your device. Else, you risk breaking the device. Read important-steps-to-do-before-updating and how-to-disable-openrepos-repositories posts for more information.

Update the software

If your Jolla is connected to WLAN network, an OS update notification should pop up shortly. If you just can't wait, you can manually trigger an OS update check as follows:

  • Open Settings app Go to System Settings->About Product
  • Pull down the pulley menu and select 'Check for update'
  • Once an OS update notification is received, tap on it and follow the instructions.

Do not reboot the device while the OS update installation is in progress. The process takes up to 10 minutes. During the update, the device screen might blank out. You can awaken the display by a short press on the power key to monitor the progress. When the upgrade has completed successfully, you will see the LED light up red before the device restarts.

In rare circumstances, you may have to try a second time to get through the update successfully.

Thanks Jollas, you're doing great work despite the enormous pressure. made backup, now Downloading... The Paarlampi lake has a nice yellowish color. The update concept is the most beautiful one I've even seen on a mobile device. Now my wife wants one Jolla too, but she digs the Poppy Red.

This "update" broke my 24 days of uptime. :P

Thanks Jolla.

BTW i see nothing in the release notes for additional keyboard layouts and i don't like that. :(

"Connection indicator in home screen now supports dual connection of WLAN and mobile data (one connection online, another ready-to-use)" the indicator is on the lock-screen isn't it?

"The software update will be first available to our dear users owning "The First one" covers." I like this spirit, thank you Jolla! It's so cool to have an update when you were not expecting it. You are on a good cruising speed now :)

Just a question about: "Swipe to close gesture available as a setting and disabled by default for new users". Why's that? Did you have bad feedbacks? To me it's an essential gesture that should be enabled by default (I actually don't see why we would like to disable it).

Sthocs ( 2014-04-11 12:34:34 +0300 )edit

MMS doesn't work in Vodafone CZ (230 03) network. I checked the settings of MMS access point - all configuration options seems to be correct. I get "Problem with sending message" error when trying to send MMS from Gallery. When receiving MMS i get the MMS notification (the signalling SMS works) but when clicking the download button (arrow in the circle) I get "Problem with downloading message" error.

Plnt ( 2014-04-11 12:36:11 +0300 )edit

Once again, updating brings problems. It seems the update isn't installed completely and it breaks up my system. Now, my SIM card isn't detected anymore, MTP support doesn't work... It was the same after 1.0.4.20 update. Please think to more ease and safety because newbies will be afraid to update soon!

juju_des_highlands ( 2014-04-11 12:37:19 +0300 )edit

Has the following issue still acknowledged in 1.0.4.20, Ohijärvi been fixed? I can't find it either as fixed either as a known issue:

Google account periodically signs out and displays "Account needs sign in" message in the Events view.

With this update, it should occur less frequently than before, but not completely fixed. In the meantime, if you face this issue, please re-login to your account.

icebox ( 2014-04-11 12:50:30 +0300 )edit

Disabling swipe down to close applications, seems to also disable swipe down to lock device. Is this intentional?

From the changelog above: "If your device is running software version lower than 1.0.4.20 and have WareHouse app installed (i.e you are using OpenRepos), disable all openrepo repositories before attempting to upgrade your device. Else, you risk breaking the device. Read important-steps-to-do-before-updating and how-to-disable-openrepos-repositories posts for more information."

Does this mean that I can do the update when 1.0.4.20 is installed and WareHouse repositories are enabled?

I used to have a bookmark saved as about:blank and always close the browser with that loaded in a tab to avoid the jolla.com homepage loading automatically on starting the browser. That url appears to have become special/un-loadable in this release, which is annoying. I have bookmarked about:mozilla instead as a workaround. Surely all of us hitting jolla.com every time we load the browser gives them a massive bandwidth bill?! Related: https://together.jolla.com/question/18188/browser-home-page/

yes, 1.0.4.20 ignores non-jolla repos during update, earlier releases do not

It looks good, thank you Jolla.

what does mean that "Notifies Jolla about developer mode activation for the Jolla account configured on the device"?

Are users using developer mode flagged somewhat?

Currently certain operations (SD card formatting for example) are possible ONLY in developer mode.

Moreover, I don't see any wifi connection/stability improvements, is that right?

c.la ( 2014-04-11 13:16:58 +0300 )edit
1

@Sthocs: My guess is that jolla added that configuration option "Shortcuts" in settings so that they can later on add all stuff related to gestures, for now that option to configure the close gesture is probably a placeholder for being able to configure gestures. I guess they will add more gesture settings there later on, maybe ones that make more sense than this one to change.

Larswad ( 2014-04-11 13:30:43 +0300 )edit
1

Sure, I am not against having the possibility to disable it (the more easily customizable, the better), my question was about why disabling it by default, it sounds weird to me.

Sthocs ( 2014-04-11 13:39:41 +0300 )edit
1

Ok, I see. I agree completely! I'd say its probably the most used gestures of all. Strange choice indeed for a default.

Larswad ( 2014-04-11 13:42:29 +0300 )edit
1

@c.la: Notifying about developer mode sounds more creepy than it is. First, Jolla is open about this. And it can help Jolla Care to respond to service issues. Users with developer mode can be given more technical instructions to fix issues, instead of just "reset your device to factory defaults." Developer mode does not void your hardware warranty. And with enabling developer mode, you already acknowledged that if you break software, you get to keep the pieces.

pycage ( 2014-04-11 13:46:33 +0300 )edit

The "close gesture" is one of the gestures that has two functions (close app, lock device) hence if you are not used to it it makes things weird. It was one of my UI irks until i got used to it.

Makes sense to have one action per gesture. BTW how you are supposed to close apps if you have it disabled?

ApB ( 2014-04-11 13:49:09 +0300 )edit

Of course but how about when you are in the app. Anyway i believe gestures will be configurable at some point.

ApB ( 2014-04-11 14:10:08 +0300 )edit
2

@droll: Funny that you say, NOW i know the scenario when the tap to wake can be dead slow. It is when a mail has just arrived, you hear that faint bing sound and the LED blinks in yellow. Thats when you double tap to wake, but nothing happens. I double tapped like five six times but nothing helped except for waiting like 10 to 20 seconds, then it reacts. I remember now, this is the exact scenarion I've seen before! And I right now noticed that it is still like this in Paarlampi.

I had the same problem, as aliendalvik seems not to be started automatically. You can check this using

systemctl status aliendalvik.service

after starting it using

systemctl start aliendalvik.service

I got the same notification on the screen again about updating all apps but now it was updating, I could see the progress using

journalctl -f _SYSTEMD_UNIT=aliendalvik.service

and after a few minutes it was done

My update doesn't go through.. I'm currently running 1.0.4.20. It downloads and starts installing, but seems to reboot after just one centimeter of progress, and then boots into the old version. It then reminds me that there is an update, that re-downloads if I choose to install it.

Absolutely flawless update over WiFi while charging. Everything updated on the first go, android apps updated themselves afterwards, no settings toggled or switched anywhere. Applications still close by swiping down by default, MMS settings were already there when I went to check, MMS sent successfully via O2-UK pay as you go.. UI feels more responsive and fast, double-tap to unlock is a LOT more responsive than before.. What else could anyone want?? (4G maybe? :P ) Thank you for this update! Keep up the good work!

This happened to me too. It was spinning for hours. I rebooted my phone twice before it worked.

I had quite a lot of Android apps installed so that may explain why it took so long.

Yet another update that doesn't fix connman :/ ! It's all nice and well to work on end-user features, but I really think it's more important to actually be able to connect to the Internet. Otherwise Jolla's just a gadget.

plaristote ( 2014-04-11 22:30:40 +0300 )edit

Wow, I didn't even realize to wait for an update this time, totally surprised me when the device said an update is available. Thought it was notifying about already installed version like it used to a good while back. =) Now installing, thanks Jolla for the nice surprise! <3

@Sthocs, we received feedback that new users are overwhelmed with the gestures, especially with the swipe down to close gesture. It seemed too abrupt/ not knowing what actually happened to the app that was just open a few seconds ago. To ease this situation, we now have a configurable option in settings. Rest assured, we love that gesture ourselves :)

bijjal ( 2014-04-11 22:49:11 +0300 )edit

@icebox The google account sign out issue is mostly fixed, but we still have things to improve on our end to get rid of the rare occasions where it still occurs.

bijjal ( 2014-04-11 22:49:54 +0300 )edit

@bijjal

Are you planning on implementing a special close app gesture?? (ie configurable swipe from left or right)

ApB ( 2014-04-11 22:51:21 +0300 )edit

wow Jolla! Nice update, Android apps are running blazing fast and much more stable now! The downside of a monthly update rate? I will propably never beat my initial uptime of 45 days :D meee

Mi android apps spun for over an hour with no obvious progress. Balta's tip helped:

systemctl status aliendalvik.service
gave : "Active: inactive (dead)"

After changing to root via devel-su and starting the aliendalvik.service my apks updated in seconds.

All my apks were beamed across from a real android phone via bluetooth - not installed from Yandex. I wonder if that may contribute to the problem?

@FlyingSheep Nah, I think it's just the way it's supposed to go. I have Play Store installed and after the update I noticed that Play Store was also automatically updating my apps, even ones I had sideloaded from other sources. I'm really glad someone made installing the Play Store as easy as installing a single apk file.

@plaristote sad to hear that. Are you ready for taking another stab at it? Let's start with why your question got deleted: https://together.jolla.com/question/26035/connection-to-most-wlanwifi-networks-failing/

I rebooted the phone and waited for a couple of hours, and then the update worked! Don't know if it was related to me cleaning out some space on the drive, or the reboot.

after the update i had some red and green blinking trouble, but after a reboot it works just fine. thanks for the update, once again :)

Hello! Great update, thank you, the MMS are very welcome!

Unfortunately, my Android apps don't seem to get updated. There are coming from the Play Store so may be this is due to that...

Is there any way to force the update of android apps?

lunatix ( 2014-04-12 11:08:42 +0300 )edit

find balta's comment to bilgy_no1's answer to this thread from friday night. This fixed the non-updating android apps problem for me

Extensive MMS settings can be found on the old Maemo Wiki: http://wiki.maemo.org/MMS_configurations

@ApB We did briefly discuss configurable swipe directions, but no plans to implement it yet.

bijjal ( 2014-04-12 12:28:39 +0300 )edit

It looks like I lost the ability to upload pictures to Facebook...?

Checked my account settings and they're OK (and I still get notifications), but I'm unable to select FB when trying to share via Gallery.

DrWilken ( 2014-04-12 12:31:51 +0300 )edit

Thanks for the update. But I hoped to receive support for caldav and carddav (question 534) with this update. So I'm a little bit dissapointed. Does anybody know why this is not yet implemented?

haasis ( 2014-04-12 12:55:03 +0300 )edit

Does not seem to do anything... How can I check if the update has been done or not? Is there any way to force it?

lunatix ( 2014-04-12 13:53:33 +0300 )edit

haasis, add webDAV to Your list and I'm a happy camper... ;)

LOVE the feedback sounds from the keyboard, very cute. Is there a way to deactivate the animations for gesture hints? After all I learned to use my Jolla properly with the tutorial and been using for so long I don't need the hints anymore. So the animations are kinda distracting. These "help"-thingies should be configurable in the setting like "Turn on/off user assistance" or something like that.

Oh, never mind, just noticed the animations seem to work only the first 2 times these apps are used. Will it be possible to turn it back on if for instance I'm lending/letting someone else to take over the phone? So that they can learn?
