Tempted to buy Jolla [answered]

Hello, I am very tempted to buy Jolla but there are still some things that I would like to have clear view on. I have read through TJC a lot but not found clear answer for some of them since if I would buy it, I would like to use it as a daily phone. I really love the overall UI look and handling and the idea behind it.

  • I would use exchange and google email accounts - how is it in terms of reliability? Are there any issues with it that would obstruct the daily use?
  • How is the camera quality or the overall build quality of the phone?
  • I would not need much apps but still are there any apps like weather, RSS or reddit clients?
  • What is at the moment in Jolla store? I have not found any way to get to know the contents :)

Thank you!

Thank you everyone for such kind answers, you have all been very helpful and I think I will soon ask many more questions once I order a device of my own :)

Google email accounts: no problem by the moment.

Camera quality: as good as the majority, and could be better (as the majority).

Overall build quality: good, although is a little bigger than I expected (my last phone was a little HP Pre).

Apps like weather, RSS or reddit clients: no problem.

Jolla store: take a look, by example, at https://openrepos.net/category/applications https://thejollablog.wordpress.com/tag/app-list/ or http://jollasuomi.fi/sovellukset-jolla-kaupassa/ .

One more thing: trust me, sometimes is worse not not to take the risk than to take the risk.

A lot of replies already on the apps and functionality, so I'll stick to the build quality and photo quality:

Build: Very sturdy and solid feel, but TOH may have a tiny bit of play in one or two corners. My Jolla already survived several drops, including a crash into a heavy mirror that dented the metal top. In that case, the screen was well protected against cracking, which I'm sure is what would have happened on many other phones.

Overall, I like the design. It has a very enticing look and feel, which I can't say about the Nexus 5 I use for work. I think a major area for improvement is the screen. Both resolution and other aspects should be improved in the Jolla 2.

Image Quality: In bright daylight it looks OK, but in poorly lit situations it's not that great. I'd say it's comparable to the HTC One S I used before, with one major difference: the Jolla applies very little, if any, Noise Filtering. This means you get more noise, but on the plus side, you retain a lot more detail.

The camera app is pretty basic: no HDR, panorama modes etc. Otoh, you do get a nice interface with control of the key parameters and more.

Jolla as a daily phone: I use it daily for my private number, and hsve an Android phone for work. I'd be OK for the most part using just the Jolla, but I want to keep work+private separate. Some apps I would miss, like mobile banking apps for which I only want to use the officially released versions with automatic updates.

N9 has better camera but Jolla's camera is okay. A few months back I had to use N9 to take some photos because Jolla's camera didn't take good enough photos. After that Jolla's camera app has had some improvements with new firmwares but I haven't re-tested if Jolla's camera is now more in parity with N9's camera.

I don't know if there is such a difference between N9 and Joll camera. Perhaps N9 macro seems slightly better but I don't think that both can be compared to any camera phone like the N808. Jolla's camera satisfies me & latest update had nice improvements.

Hello, I'm also using Jolla as my main phone and at the moment it does what i expected to do. I don't have Android compatibility on (that's one of the reasons i bought it to get rid of Android and Google). Also no Open Repos enabled. I only use the Jolla store but i would like to see paid apps in it (I' m somebody who's willing to pay for a good app). The only thing that should be improved in future updates is the media app because it lacks some important features and that's one of the apps i use a lot(personal interest). And about the gesture based interface, once you get used it, you don't wan't another!!! If i was you i would say let's go sailing.

For me buying a Jolla is an investment is the future. In the current state many devices on the market are better both SW and (especially!)HW. And here I am not speaking about CPU and RAM - they are really OK on Jolla!!!, but materials, design, quality. On the other hand Jolla is a journey, most of the time a merry one :) And I feel personally involved in the development and survival of the the company and ideas behind it. I help by buying the product, buying third party accessories(Lastucase) I steer and participate of shaping the UI and features by being active here on TJC. Overall I have good feeling being part of this....and hoping it turns out to be great in the future. Now on your questions:

  1. Exchange is vital for my work(I use Jolla as main device), so far I am happy. I only miss contact search in global directory and accepting invitations. Folder hierarchy is messed up as well. Otherwise it is pretty reliable(but some hiccups now and then). Getting better though. On the other side is GMail and all IMAP mailing - no push and idle which ruins the experience immensely for me! I haven't checked mail manually for years. I want always up to date mailboxes. But here are the good news - it is coming in update in several months.
  2. Camera is decent, nothing special. Does the job.
  3. Apps are fine and getting better.I do not miss anything currently(except SWYPE keyboard), just some of the apps I use to get better. And I do not use Android compatibility. I only hope Jolla allows paid applications in Store stoon, so developers start getting what they deserve!

So I will not give you an advice what to do-read my thoughts and decide yourself.

Are you willing to try something new? Are you patient enough for a system that is growing? Do you like gesture based UI's, such as the N9's? If you answered yes, then buy it. I am currently using it as my main phone and it's great.
Re your questions:
Exchange/Google - no idea, but plenty of information on this website or talk.maemo.org
Camera quality - I suppose it's good enough, don't try to compare it to the Nokias
Applications - weather: meecast is out there through openrepos IIRC, I learned to live without it and use the browser instead, and it is actually much better; RSS: I use Tidings from the Jolla store; reddit: I remember seeing it somewhere
Jolla store - there are loads of things, sadly still no paid applications, so some developers (or at least one of them) are holding off until that happens. Ask more specific questions and people will answer I guess.
Good luck!

Related to Exchange Server, I use my Jolla as work phone for my companny and there are no issues at least I haven't found yet. So emails, calendar and contacts get nicely synchronized and since today with the latest update also both ways :) Everything in Jolla works like in the mighty N9 , except a search function in Jolla's Email-app would be appreciated! Regards.

I hate it, I love it, I hate it, I love it ... Now I'm in love stage. :)

Anyhow, with all the criticism, the phone worth money, because Jolla support is great, OS is innovative, wayland and QT5 have lot of potential and is LINUX. :) Jolla want to succeed and by buying a phone you help them to make a great experience for you.

  1. Exchange support is not working for me as there are 6 policies which are not yet implemented. For some people exchange is working fine and got better with latest updates.
  2. Google mail and chat is working great
  3. Camera got better and better with each update. AF is working great, while on image processing is room for improvement.
  4. Phone is solid and TOH is a great feature. I plan to build a solar charger with harvesting chip at some point in time.
  5. Weather, RSS or reddit clients are available on the store. Few more apps in alpha/beta stage are available trough openrepos.
  6. Well, in Jolla store are around 210 apps. Few are android. At openrepos you'll get much more apps. And, by the way, many android apps are running quite great.

You didn't ask, but at a normal daily usage, few mails, chat and browsing, I charge the phone after 55-60 hours while keeping wifi and 3G on all the time.

I can answer a few of those questions, hope that someone else will fill these for me :)

Google account works very fine after the latest update, Jolla syncs information (calendars, emails etc.) very well. I haven't used any Exchange accounts, so I hope that someone else will answer this one.

I'm not personally a camera power user, but I like Jolla's camera over for example Galaxy Note or Huawei Ascend G700 cameras. It's not super good, but it is enough for me and has been good enough for many else too. I have heard a few friends say that Jolla's camera is much better than the ones on their phones. The only problem with the camera is that when you're shooting videos, the recording is super shaky( atleast my shots are, but i have super shaky hands :D), Jolla doesn't seem to have any kind of image stabilization.

The build quality is good. Not great, but good. I have a bit loose volume rocker and a bit squeaky TOH (after several removals/attaches though), but it doesn't bother me at all. This doesn't apply to all Jolla devices, and I don't even notice these if I'm not specifically thinking about them. Personally I love the design over anything else on the market now.

You can find a few RSS readers and grab a Reddit client too (Quickddit for SailfishOS - Reddit client, there are several RSS clients available from Jolla store, for example Tidings and TT-RSS Lite). My personal favorite weather app is MeeCast, you can find it from Jolla store. The store has grown pretty fast in my opinion. I found almost every single app I use from Jolla store (except for Mitäkuuluu - a SailfishOS Whatsapp client by Coderus). Here's a link to a list of Jolla Store apps: http://jollasuomi.fi/sovellukset-jolla-kaupassa/ (it's a pretty outdated version nowadays though)

Hope this helped to make your decision :)

1) I think there are a few bugs left so your mileage may vary. Search TJC bugs for missing functionality you might need.

2) Camera i have no idea about its quality (i am not much of a camera connoisseur). Built quality is OK. Not iPhone solid feel in the hand but feels nice.

3) See vasavrs answer.

4) There is no interface as of now.Upvote here > https://together.jolla.com/question/2721/jolla-application-store-web-version/
