1.0.8.21 Network connection just stops working (daily basis) [released]

I guess, it gets worse, before it gets better.

The issue is that after 1.0.5.16, suddenly I'm having to reboot once or twice a day, because when the jolla looses Wifi connection or mobile data connection, sometimes I can get it back by going to flight mode and back, but, most of the time, it just gives me the network connection problem warning, and sometimes another one which says some other weird message ("incorrect value entered" - thanks @statler), and then just never recovers!

And, sometimes, if I try to access the network, the network pop-up thing shows up, and clicking on WiFi says it can't find any networks, when on any other device, or on this one 5 min ago, it shows multiple available APs!

It's like the network connection part just moved from beta to alpha, instead of production stable :P

EDIT: It's been long enough since the update to confirm that this is in fact a problem. I keep regularly having these issues.

EDIT 2: 1.0.7.16 got a little better, but only some of the time, still get these issues often

EDIT 3: 1.0.8.19 OMG it just got a lot worse :,(

EDIT 4: 1.0.8.21 no change

might be related to this now

Same here yet not with wifi, only mobile data. Connection is terribly fragile and "network connection error" and "problem with network" followed by "incorrect value entered" is a daily visitor. Connection breaks in pretty much same locations every time and recover sometimes sooner than on other occasions. Service provider does not confess any problems at their end, of course, and the connection used to be a bitmore stable before the production versio, when still in beta.

Seen this once with wifi and 1.0.5.16. The Jolla refused to see any wireless networks at all, searching returned no networks found instantly but 3G was still functional. Flightmode sorted the issue out. There were no obvious errors in the journal. Next time it happens I'll debug further.

This is so irritating. In my case it doesn't depend on whether i'm using 3G or WiFi. And usually it doesn't show any info about it, i mean everything looks like they would work, but then doesn't. Sometimes when i try to open the internet or some web-based app it says "network connection error". For example not getting my messages or sending a message via Mitäkuuluu, and not getting any info about that it didn't reach the recipient drives me mad, and not least because this is a daily problem.

I have had some problems with connections as well. Sometimes it refuses to connect to 3G, when no WLAN is present, sometimes it refuses to connect to the WLAN. Flight-mode has solved them on all occasions. I experienced a special case of the latter, when returning from flight-mode at work and I was asked what connection to use. While I could see the WLAN SSID I couldn't connect to that, but when I switched to 3G that worked. Much later the phone connected to the WLAN by itself.

Same here. Before 1.0.5.16 I had stable 3G and WLAN connections. Now, both connections are frequently lost. When WLAN is deactivated the phone does not fall back to 3G. Disabling WLAN seems to disable 3G, too. Reactivating WLAN sometimes results in "connection error" messages and a frozen 3G traffic indicator. Most of the time it does nothing. This update finally rendered my phone useless. This wouldn't be a big issue for me iff the software would honestly still be called alpha or beta...

Same here. Wifi definitely got worse after the update. I had random connection errors with 1.4.0.20 before and only used my Jolla in Tablet mode without simcard. But now it has gotten really annoying to always wait for the connection to come back.

This is extremely annoying. My Wifi works without problems, but my 3G isn't reliable at all, most of the time it just doesn't work. I don't know what happened with the latest update, but it's simply unacceptable for a €400 phone that's supposedly out of beta.

This is also a major issue for me, as I rely on xmpp messaging more than sms's or calls.

Problem seems much worse with multiple WPA2 APs sharing the same PSK, so it may be related to roaming between them.

I figured out something, If you keep both WLAN and mobile data on, it's unstable, but usable, If you manually managed which connection is on at any given moment, that's when the s*it really hits the fan!

I have also this same problem - I got a lot of Karma when I issued this same problem here. I have 1.0.5.19 (Paarlampi) and I must also reboot my phone several thimes in a day! Device looses it's connection to Internet when changing fron network to another network ( WiFi to 3G or WiFi to new WiFi)

same here. I can't even use both wifi and mobile data. The Device thinks that there is wifi available and doesn't connect to mobile data. And if it connects, there is often the mentioned connection error without any providers problem.

drummer12 ( 2014-05-16 14:09:31 +0300 )edit

Did you guys try opting in for the Hotfix?

This is nothing constructive, but: instead of rebooting your device, you probably can just switch to airplane mode and back to have the same effect on your connectivity as a reboot.

cjp ( 2014-07-02 16:59:06 +0300 )edit

The hotfix is also completely unstable (on my phone, other seem to have less or no problems), it happens several times a day that I wake my Jolla up and find that the connection is not working at all, or the connection is alternating between wifi and mobile every few seconds, with none of them working. Sometimes the flight mode helps, sometimes reboot is necessary. I'm afraid I've given up and ordered an Android device.

Ozymandias ( 2014-07-03 10:41:37 +0300 )edit

My connection issues have decreased ever since I started to turn of wifi whenever I leave home and there is no wifi available. It seems to make the mobile data connection a bit more stable.

statler ( 2014-07-03 14:27:43 +0300 )edit

Just to adding my self to the line. After upgrading to 1.0.7.16, my network connection have become extremely unreliable. Both mobile data and wlan. I once thought that "Prefer 3G" helped, but no it did not. Since this seems to be a wide problem, I hope it is a high priority issue for the Sailfish developer team.

ksysta1 ( 2014-07-06 23:57:25 +0300 )edit

For me, this affects only WLAN, the 3G data connection is fine.

There are 2 kinds of symptoms, either the device looks like it is attached to the WLAN but no data goes thru (and neither to 3G as it prefers WLAN) or the WLAN symbol blinks with an exclamation mark.

The workaround is easy, fortunately; the condition is fixed when I turn the WLAN off and on again. It is a bit annoying though, if I want to ssh to my Jolla from my home network, I have to find the device first, then turn the wlan off and on again to get it to connect...

The behaviour was same with the opt-in-beta version of network manager in 10.0.8.18 which I tried, so I had to roll back to the previous network manager. And now it seems to be the standard feature....

juiceme ( 2014-07-17 09:26:41 +0300 )edit

Since update 1.0.8..19 Tahkalampi, the connection issues remain but changed nature. Having both WLAN and mobile data activated, the toggle between is still difficult for the device. Funny enough, there may be a working connection, but the device informs "problem with connection" and "incorrect value entered". In addition to that, the device may prompt to select manually if I want to use WLAN or mobile data.

statler ( 2014-07-17 10:36:53 +0300 )edit

This is getting annoying, even with a opt-in-beta Jolla did not notice that it was better not to force everyone to opt-in at the next update? I mean, it is clearly worse :P

Similar problem here. I turn on the phone at home -> it connects to my wifi just fine. Walk out of range of wifi -> it tries to connect to mobile internet and throws up connection errors every 2-3 seconds. When i reboot the phone then it connects to the 3G, 4G etc. just fine. If i go back into the range of my wifi, again the connection error every few seconds. Reboot the phone and it connects like a charm!

Seems like there's a problem with switching between the different connections (wifi/mobile network internet). I'm on 1.0.8.19

daywalker ( 2014-07-23 14:48:18 +0300 )edit

I also have "this" kind of behaviour. Somtimes WLAN works, sometimes not, sometimes it says connected but doesn't work, sometimes it's not connected (according to the phone) but webpages show up. I'm even not sure if a 'disabled' (2g/3g/4g) connection is transmitting data in the background instead of over WLAN. This would be really bad.

Yes, certainly WLAN connectivity is worse for me under 1.0.8.19 than under the previous release. And that's a shame.

strongm ( 2014-07-23 21:49:03 +0300 )edit

I just started having similar problems. I have updated to 1.0.8.19 since its release and until yesterday, things seemed to work quite well, having both wlan and 3g enabled at all times. After a long drive passing through different cities, my phone shut down having run out of battery. Since then, every time I turn on the data connection I see the 'Problem with connection' error every 2-3 seconds. I can only use wlan now which is very inconvenient when I'm traveling.

I can confirm all the problems that you describe here.

With 1.0.5.X it was not got ... with 1.0.7.16 it was ok and with 1.0.8.19 it is annoying.

But I have a additional observation: My Jolla often fails to connect to the WiFi at home. Two APs same SSID, different channels, different vendor, same security settings, no proxy. Quite often I'll be promoted to enter the wifi key again, but this never helps. Sometimes a reboot could fix the connection problem. However if I leave my home and got to work - i suspect jolla has tried to connect to my wifi unsuccessful - it still shows my home wifi (with strength) and tries to connect to it. Even when I'm more then 20 km away from my home AP. I didn't had this problem with 1.0.7.16.

Hi, I can totally confirm! It looks like a bug! If I loose the connection it reconnects sometimes and then it doesn't work. Sometimes switching to airplane mode helps, but most of the time I have to reboot... This is annoying and makes the phone very close to useless ;((

Funny thing: the last 2 days WLAN worked without a problem with eduroam and several other home access points. Problems seem to be really random.

luchmhor ( 2014-07-25 15:15:06 +0300 )edit

i confirm this is a random problem. the problem i decribed below vanished for 2 days. had it for 3 days before. could be tomorrow that it's back :(

I confirm the behaviour you describe. My workaround (the only way I found to have a usable phone) is to always have WIFI disabled, and only enable it when needed. When I do enable it, don't move from AP to AP. This is the only way it almost works ok now, except that when I turn WIfi off I have some trouble getting my accounts to remain online, most of the time

@Spock112 We have a fix coming for the "wifi key"-problem. See: https://together.jolla.com/question/50914/wlan-asking-for-password-again-wpa2psk/

tigeli ( 2014-08-13 21:39:08 +0300 )edit

@tigeli good to hear that! But I can't see a fix in the post you linked.

Spock112 ( 2014-08-13 23:07:57 +0300 )edit

Can't compare with previous version as my phone came with this release but my experience is a little different.

  • In a network with only Apple routers, wifi is rock solid stable, the phone sticks to wifi and doesn't do the 3g/wifi dance.
  • In a network with multiple brands of routers (Linksys+Apple, TP-Link+Apple, DD-WRT+Apple), I have to turn off wifi to get some peace and quiet on a stable 3g connection.

@Spock112 : It is said here, can't wait to have this fixed :) "@SanjayMehta update 9 will have fix for this RSN IE problem and it should be out in near future. tigeli (Oct 6 '14)"

From what I observed, when you go out from wifi spot, the phone remains "connected" to old wifi and IP address is not released, therefore when you go to another hotspot with different ssid, you are not able to connect anymore and need to reboot phone.

[1.1.1.27] I'm closing this topic, now, with deep thanks to Jolla, since, in my experience, the connection instability problems seem to finally have been fixed!

If anyone disagrees, please reopen.

What are your experiences with this new update 10?

For me this problem started after updating to Update 10... I will try resetting the device and doing a clean update.

Disparil ( 2014-12-29 20:22:53 +0300 )edit

Same problem. After Update 10 my wifi stopped to work. It can see wifi spots and connects to it (but I can't reach any site or Jolla Store or anything else) and after about 10-15 seconds shows "!" icon and nothing works:(

sail10 ( 2015-01-03 21:58:00 +0300 )edit

Fixed for me now, update10 was good.

Sanjay Mehta ( 2015-01-05 09:58:45 +0300 )edit

I am also experiencing a problem with my home WLAN connection. Only with my Jolla phone, and only since updating to 1.1.1.27.

It manifests as the '!' symbol or as the stripey 'unavailable' pattern, in the wifi icon. None of the following fix the problem: going to/from flight mode, disabling/enabling wlan, rebooting phone, removing/reinstalling battery, restarting or resetting router.

When I 'forget network' from the WLAN settings page, and then re-add it, my phone connects immediately - all good. Some time later, often the same day, suddenly my phone loses the connection and is unable to reconnect.

Currently, I am unable to say whether this only happens with my home network, or with all networks. Anyone know what log files I should look into, to check for any relevant messages?

Wilty ( 2015-01-06 14:41:37 +0300 )edit

I solved my problem with hard reset and updating to U10 again. 3 days - everything works fine (also got installed different patches and apps from Warehouse). Yahoo!!)))
