Is the camera app broken or a hardware issue?

A few weeks ago my camera started acting weird. At first the main camera stopped working (there was no image and I could not click on the shutter) but I could use all other settings. Switching to the front camera gave me an image, and I could make photos with the front camera. Changing camera settings random showed a "camera unresponsive" message.

Right now starting the app leads nowhere. I tap the icon but the app doesn't start.

I hardly make photos, but that fact that I can't make any photos annoys me a bit. Do others have these camera issues? Should I send in the phone to examine?

For me the camera did once or twice that but reboot always helped.

I was hoping the last update would solve the issue, but it didn't.

I tried rebooting but that doesn't help.

I had this problem yesterday, a reboot sorted it but I missed the shot I was after. Clearly a bug not fixed in current release. Answers below are work arounds rather than true answers

You could check if an android cam-app works with the main sensor...

After the third reboot tonight the camera worked again. So it seems that the issue is solved now. But it still is a bug that the camera can stop working for no apparent reason.
