Wait for Jolla or go with Nexus 4/5?

My initial plan was to wait until Jolla is sold in Hong Kong so I can somehow purchase it from here in Malaysia. However my beloved N9 just broke a month ago and I am currently thinking of getting a replacement. I like how SailfishOS is similar to (MeeGo) Harmattan but I can't wait indefinitely for a new phone as my spare phone is pretty much worthless. I saw a port of SailfishOS was released, while it is not quite ready for day-to-day use but it does look like it will get better.

So the question is, is the SailfishOS port on Nexus 4(5?) gonna be officially supported? If so I would probably try getting myself a Nexus instead of waiting for Jolla (as there's no date is announced besides the usual 'soon' story).

Maybe someone knows of an equivalent service to www.shopanyamericanstore.com or www.internationalcheckout.com for Europe. For sure you would be charged something extra, but it's an option if you want the real deal. Nexus will not offer the same experience for the foreseeable future. The jolla in its package is worth the price. The overall experience beats everything and is almost on par with the incredible N9/Harmattan combo. But Sailfish is about to overtake.

I'm facing the exact same question. I'm in China, my N9 broke recently, and I'm eagerly waiting for Jolla to come to Hong Kong. Can we have a statement from Jolla when we'll be able to buy it from HK?

You can try purchasing via www.bongous.com, they have an billing address in Belgium, and also ship to Malaysia, according to their site. I'm currently planning this myself as my N9 is currently on borrowed time. Only thing is warranty returns etc, but that's the some for anyone outside of Finland afaik.

Haven't tried yet. Still looking, there are others, though In my early investigations hadn't found the negatives, that one was listed as a possibility on TMO. If only Jolla would ship world wide!

It depends on what you want... I had several Android devices during the last 3 years plus the N900 and the N9. My last Android device was the Nexus 5, which was and is a great device but Android is not for me thus I threw it on the bay 2 weeks ago.

Yes, with the Nexus 5 you get great and solid hardware and I really loved this phone. But over the time found out that for me it is the software that counts and after a few weeks with Sailfish the Android UI felt like a child's toy. There was no day without frustration over Google patronizing its users. Plus several security risks you have like automatically uploading your Wifi keys to Google's servers as a "convenient backup function". The same with your address book etc.

If you can cope with not-bleeding-edge hardware and a handful of things not working _yet_ I would say go for the Jolla. Jolla treats is users as responsible persons and it has a great community. I don't miss the Nexus :)

Run it on Jolla of course. 1) to support Jolla and 2) because it runs best on the Jolla phone and I guess that won't change for a while. Plus you have Alien Dalvik only on the Jolla phone.

the only problem being it is almost impossible to purchase one here in malaysia, and jolla is keeping us waiting for the phone since february (MWC)

It would appear to me that hacking around to get someone to post a Jolla to you would be less arduous in the long run than hacking around to get Sailfish to run on a continuous basis with less supported hardware. The Jolla hardware mostly does the job well and the design stands out.

in my advice. wait for nexus. sailfish is a nice OS. but the only problem is the chinese hardware, so don't buy it. wait in the future for something serious

Which hardware is NOT chinese these days? In terms of build quality the Jolla is one of the better phones, IMO.

Are you kidding???? If you push on the edge screen, first you see the liquid move and next you crush the crystal. The audio hardware is very weak and sound come out very low. The camera has bad color compared to N9's camera. And under sun shine you cannot see very well at the screen. Internal memory is only 16Gb

The only good things are screen size, battery size and CPUs, a good WIFII antenna module(really is the strongest I had since now)

The Nexus devices will be community supported but if 'official' support is important to you, or things that in the short term can't be available on non-Jolla devices (codecs, mapping, Alien Dalvik, Exchange support are the things that spring to my mind) then you should be looking at a Jolla.

As @Titanium states, Sailfish for Android is coming along very nicely but there are still technical and legal obstacles that need to be overcome. To get a feeling for those and how things are shaping up, see the meeting logs here; in particular topic 4, starting at 16:01:04.

i would suggest going for nexus 5. you will have better hardware (though Sailfish doesn't require higher specs than wats in Jolla, at least the screen will be better). and probably superior overall build quality.

i understand the question is about the wait.. Jolla arriving in your local market vs. Sailfish official support for Nexus devices. speculations.
