Random black screen of death [answered]

I think this is NOT the same issue as the one described here:

https://together.jolla.com/question/7144/jolla-randomly-shuts-down-10516/

Symptoms: Black screen. Phone does not respond to anything, including power button or power+volume+. No led light.

Frequency: about 1-3 times per week

The only known way to recover is to remove and re-insert the battery. The issue started happening on 1.0.5.16 and has been confirmed by at least one other user. The issue has happened while using the device (making a call, using calendar) and during sleep. Battery level does not seem to have any effect (has happened with 80% left). Re-inserting battery boots the phone without using power button. Clock alarms do not work if the issue happens.

It is still unknown if kernel is alive and networking works (would be useful for debugging).

Had this too... But for now, since taking out battery more times, no problems at all (since more than one week). Very strange.

I experienced similar behaviour couple of times. I also experienced random shut downs. After I put two pieces of tape between the phone and the battery, shut downs and black screens have not been present.

You said you THINK it's not the same issue than the shut down - problem, but are you sure? Have you tried the piece-of-paper-fix? If not, then give it a try. You have nothing to lose. :)

I used to have the shutdown problem earlier, but this seems to be different. With the "old" shutdown issue it was possible to start / reboot the phone with power button. I also experienced random reboots, but they seem to have been cured. I have not tested piece-of-paper-fix yet. Will try tomorrow.

You might want to check journalctl, maybe it contains interesting log messages about what has happened - see here.

Piece of paper under the battery: busted

I just got the issue again. Looks like wlan is down:

ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.43 port 22: No route to host

I haven't seen this issue in a few months - probably sending Jolla to service fixed it. If you get this, send your phone for free servicing and it won't happen again. Some of the software updates may also be related.
