How to force fetching of facebook avatars/covers.

Plenty of my contacts had their avatars/cover photos retrieved from facebook, but a good deal more did not.

How do I force the device to fetch the photos for these contacts? These are all facebook contacts (eg: I didn't add them manually, they were auto-created when I added facebook).

Go to settings > Accounts > select facebook acc > swipe to the left and the pictures should be updated.

Nope, that didn't do anything. Swiping left just goes back to the previous screen, and lots of my facebook contacts are still missing their avatar photo.

From right to left..

Swiping left-to-right and right-to-left does the exact same thing: takes me to the previous screen.

Yea but this will initiate the update of facebook pictures. :) If this is not working I don't know what's wrong but it's possible that the specific contacts have set some privacy settings in facebook.

Actually, the other answer (which I've posted) describes how to fix the issue. I still don't know what caused that problem in the first place though.

I realized what the issue is, and it's pretty lame.

Jolla create two contacts for some facebook friends: An IM contact, which only has the XMPP address (eg: -1032367405@chat.facebook.com), and another contact which has the website (https://www.facebook.com/someusername).

The latter has the photo, the former does not. Merging them solves the issue, and, while most contacts are pre-merged, some are not.
