This depends if you have quick-dial activated or not. Have a look at the settings-app, select apps and there the phone-app settings. If you have activated quick-dial, the default number is called immediately. If not, the contact card will be displayed including all contact options. And of course you may dial the desired number from there...

Now I just realized, that there is a possible misunderstanding: Do you really mean the contacts-app or the phone-app, showing the call-history when opened? The described behavior is the one of the phone-app, when quick.dial is activated, but you have written 'contacts'. Would be nice if you can verify that again, thanks! :)

i mean the phone-app. Tapping on the phonesymbol opens a list with the call history. Tapping on a item just starts a call. Ok, now i know, that a longtap brings up the choice of opening the contact and then i can choose the phone number.
Thanks for your answer

Or, as I said in my original answer: Just deactivate quick-dial in the phone settings and contact card will be shown when you just execute a short tap...

You're welcome! Please also close the request, so this is marked as solved, if anybody looks for it in the future...

Actually, selecting a contact from People app brings you to a page with all the selected contacts informations; the first phone number is highlighted and has the "Call" and "Send SMS" buttons, but you can switch to another phone number (or contact option, like an email address) by tapping on it.
