I've only noticed this lately. Sometimes when I do a swipe up to check for notifications I see a facebook notification with the facebook icon greyed out. There wasn't any sound or light to tell me I had notification.

Social notifications are currently classified as being less important than other forms of "direct communication" (such as emails, messages and missed calls). As such, the non-graphical-feedback for social notifications is less intrusive than for the other notifications, and they do not appear on the lock screen but are only shown in the events feed.

Ok, that makes sense. What is the meaning of the symbol being greyed out?

Nothing, the greyed out / monochrome icons are our standard "notification" form of icon. All notifications shown in the notifications section of the events view are monochrome (eg, new emails, missed calls, new messages, social notifications, etc) with just one exception: SailfishOS update notifications.
