Fixed sorting of application covers on home screen [released]

Is it possible to pin an app? That means to stop movement of an application cover to the top left position whenever it gets entered again? In my personal use case there are always at least 4 apps active. I could enter them almost blindly, if they would not mix all the time.

Edit: After using the phone for about one year I sometimes still get confused by the moving app covers. With more than 4 apps open the covers get smaller and harder to identify.

Edit 2: It would even be enough to have a generic setting like "sort app covers (most recently used apps are moved to top right position)" that could be disabled.

Perhaps there's room for a pin button mirroring the close button in the long-tapped window managing view. I'm guessing the desired pinning order would tend to be be particular enough that you'd pretty much need drag-to-rearrange too at this point... that said, not sure I'd care for it personally

This essentially amounts to two things: disable auto-rearrangement by last use, and make it possible to move app thumbnails (maybe when in "delete mode" after holding down?)

If you want to have application stop reordering themselves, be sure that it is an option. I like this behaviour from the Harmattan times, and it helps me going back to the application I previously used.

Yes, definitely make it an option, probably somewhere in the settings. I think ordering by last use is a good default.

We're looking into improving the Home experience at some point. This is useful feedback and is partially what we had in mind originally, but just didn't have enough time to implement. Thanks for the input :)

Having "pinned" apps auto-start after a reboot would be nice too - I'm always restarting the same 4 apps whenever I reboot (phone, email, messaging and the android vm).

Great that this is being considered! I suggest that each place on the homescreen (1..9) can be reserved for a specific app (placeholder). This app might be started automatically or can be started via tapping the placeholder. There is no UX change, if no reservation used. To allow the latest used app to be on the home screen, if there are more than 9 apps open, the placeholders could be limited to 6, leaving 3 slots for the latest used apps without any reservation.

There could be a set of presets for how to present the active covers.

Right now there is only one preset, two by two or three by three placeholders, filled from the topLeft to the bottomRight.

New presets could fill the placeholders in other patterns. One could be like the current layout but mirrored. Another could be filling from the bottom upwards.

Placeholders could also have different sizes. There's already two sizes for the active covers. The presets could have additional sizes. Android apps that have no functions on their active covers could have very small placeholders, just buttons, really.

The choice of layout could be linked to an ambience. One preset layout for intense social time on the net, another for driving home and yet another for sailing. The active cards of the Deck would be saved when switching to another Ambience.

The missing piece was pinning the apps in place...

The solution to this problem comes with Sailfish 2.0:

"... the App covers do not all shuffle around anymore after swiping one app away. This is achieved via a new logic for positioning the covers: newly opened apps will go the end of the grid, while already open apps will go back to the same location where they have been. This change makes the whole experience more laid back, it’s easier to memorize the location of a certain app cover, and thus makes multitasking even more powerful."

If I close one of the apps, will the next app I open go to the last position of the grid or to the first vacant one?

I think this can be closed now as with Sailfish OS 2.0, all covers stay in place unless you specifically change their position or remove them.
