Inform wifi tether clients about wan link status

I think it would be nice if we had some kind of tool to show wan signal status to connected clients maybe via a small www-server? So that i could see somehow from my laptop if the phone is connected to 2g or 3g for example.
It's annoying for example in a train when the phone intermittently loses signal and thus no data moves via the wifi tether either and one has to check the phone to see the reason.
