Edit: I'm bumping up this year-old question. There should be a user-friendly way to back up the whole system (not only the home directory, not only some app data, but everything on your device) so you can restore your device to an earlier state in case something goes wrong.@ssahla

I think could be very useful to have the chance to make a full backup and restore of the system just like Android and to put it on the external sd card. Something can go wrong with an update, a command with terminal or an app, so, if we could restore a backup, we can avoid to reset completely our device and.. why not to have the chance to restore from PC too?

Good idea! A system reset costs me every time almost a full day of work: reinstall all apps and their settings and re-configure the whole system including the arrangement of the icons in the launcher, the ambiences, WLAN, Bluetooth etc.

That would be a really great feature!

Currently there is ability to save whole backup storage to SD card and get it back. There are also plans to provide a way to choose sd card as a default storage for backups but no ETA.

For me it looks like this Q is the duplicate of https://together.jolla.com/question/4288/save-backup-to-pc-or-sd-card/

the request is for a full system backup; the currently available built-in backup only saves certain user data, but not the system itself. so no duplicate.

@Low it can be done by means of btrfs snapshot with deletion of the snapshot after upgrade if user is happy

I meant a full system backup, same as Android, a system image to restore when needed.

option 1 : in the recovery function :Why not a dd command with the recovery function ???

Jolla Recovery v0.2

Welcome to the recovery tool!

The available options are:

1) Reset phone to factory settings 2) Reboot phone 3) Bootloader unlock [Current state: locked] 4) Shell 5) Try btrfs recovery if your device is in bootloop 6) Exit

or option 2 i prefer !

a tird usb mode (mass storage) with choice to acces to 1 sytem or 2 sd card

Then you can full backup it with a conventional dd command like dd if://dev/sdX of=/dev/sdaX/backofmygreatjollathatjustrocks!.dd.

This option mass storage can also permit to use your phone as boot device !

i explain :i used it on my old N900 with multisystem boot installed on the sd card ... works great !

I think in the future you can so use your phone to promote sailfish and use sailfish on a pc .....

I think it's the better way to show that jolla & sailfish just UNLIKE !

What you think ?

reconsidering usb mass storage just like question https://together.jolla.com/question/10002/alternative-to-mtp-usb-mass-storage/

using jolla as boot device is a must !

I'd prefer something more along the lines of oandbackup

  • get a list of all apps, data and settings and give me an option of either backing up the lot or just selected.
  • restore from that backup location the same way
