It appears that the native gallery app is not showing some of the older pictures taken with camera. The picture thumbnails are displayed as should be, but when clicked only the "desktop" background is shown without the photo. Is there something that can be done to fix this?

I got the same problem.
To fix the images, I just copy all the pictures again.
I think you can do that different ways.
I did from cli for Jolla folder.
cd /home/nemo/Pictures
cp -a Jolla Jolla_new
rm -rf Jolla
mv Jolla_new Jolla
Then pictures are displayed well again. You can do that for Camera folder or other pictures folders.
I don't know if there is any db index for pictures and if this index got any problem. So the copy do the workaround instead of fix it. I tried moving the pics but pics are not displayed.

This would seem to be now fixed by Jolla. When the ~38 update came initially, the pics were not shown but some days ago the same update came again ~38 and after that, pics are shown the right way.

I can confirm this. This broke after I updated to 1.0.2.5. Files are ok but gallery shows that their width and height are zero. New images taken with the camera are ok.
Juho ( 2013-12-28 23:24:48 +0300 )editThis occurred to me when updating from 1.0.1.10 to 1.0.1.12 and you had pics in gallery in the first folder "kuvat" taken prior the 1.0.1.12. - update. Videos, facebook pics and ambiences are not affected. These unseen pics can be modified etc though

The user rights of the picture folder and pictures seem to be same than previously.

I had to redo the symlinks after Sailfish update.
Oh, it seems that new pics rights are a bit different:
