The settings to check for updates only on wlan is not taken into account properly, I just connected LTE and opened the store and all for a sudden I get an update notice for 7.18

Check for updates setting in the Sailfish OS updates setting page is for automatic checking once a day.

Store client will also report updates when you open it. (If there are any of course)

ah so this does not prevent updates being pulled in mobile env... :/

No it only prevents unwanted network traffic caused by automated checks. You can still check for updates and update manually in mobile env.
