# 4G LTE bug cannot receive call - diverted to voicemail

Hi,

since last update (1.0.7.16), with LTE activated, some calls are not received on my phone and are sent to the voicemail. On top of that, the voicemail doesn't infom me of those lost calls. My network is Orange in France.

Does anyone have discovered the same issue?

Yes same here. Certainly because I'm in a LTE covered area but inside a building with poor reception. So I think the Jolla tries to switch from time to time and sometime, I see that I have no coverage at all (even had to reboot yesterday because the phone wasn't able to find the network again).

But I get the sms informing about those calls on the voicemail without message left as soon as the Jolla find the network back, because it's a simple sms. How does Orange inform you about those "missed call" on the voicemail usually?

I usually get an sms. Now I have tried another method via "visual voicemail" to see the behaviour. Like you, I have a quite bad coverage in my building, but the real problem is that some notifications of missed call are lost. But not for you @Sthocs ?

To be sure: you are talking about getting a sms when a person tries to reach you, ends up on your voicemail and hang up before leaving you a message, right? In this case yes, I get an sms from my provider (Free)

Same here (Swisscom) several times. GSM signal was excellent both on 2G, 3G and 4G as I was in the middle of Zuerich out on the street.

Same here in France with Free operator. Phone not ringing or sent to voicemail and doesn't inform me i had a lost call.

Sorry, this is not a solution but nevertheless here's some general background on LTE.

Unfortunately current commercial LTE/4G networks do not support voice over LTE and need to page mobile devices to switch to legacy 2G or 3G networks to complete any voice call operation. There are a number of things which may go wrong, for incoming voice calls one symptom is if the handover is not completed fast enough the incoming call paging timeouts as if user did not answer (and as a result may be redirected to voicemail). One of the many reasons for such fail is if network indicates to device a handover to a certain frequency/cell, but due to mobility that becomes too weak/far away. Other reasons may be e.g. problems in the network side implementation of 4G Circuit switched callback (CSFB) to 2G/3G.

From user point of view it is hard (or impossible) to say if a specific case is because of network or mobile device side problems. It however never hurts to contact your service provider if you're having such problems constantly. Setting a device to prefer 3G will avoid these problems - with the cost of not gaining the advantage of 4G data speeds.

Thanks for this explanation, that's exactly what happen. I've made some additional tests, and the switch to 2G takes so much time than in the best case the caller has already heard 3 rings when I am finally notified of the call, and sometimes indeed, the caller is sent to the voicemail while the phone haven't finished the switch. That explain why lately my phone was often ringing like only 3 secs before the caller would hang up.

In my case I think the problem comes from my ISP (Free Mobile like @Damien Caliste), because first, it sucks (why do I switch to 2G and not 3G?), and also because as it is relatively young, it partly uses antennas of Orange. So when the switch has to be made between a Free Mobile 4G antenna to an Orange 2G antenna... well, I'll never get the call.

Ok so I am definitely switching back to 3G, unless I have a big internet session to make. I'll wait for VoLTE.

Thanks for the confirmation. I think you should let Free mobile hear about these problems. Yeah, VoLTE would be nice but it's not reality very soon.

Thank you for the information, it is most probably a good explaination. @Sthocs , I have 4G with Orange and I expereince the same issues, so it is not provider related I would say. Either the low coverage, or the performances of the network chip inside the Jolla. The latest is most probably our problem if I compare the behaviour to other phones in the same environment and provider...

I just put in my Telenor 4G card in the phone. Data transfer is superb, but I can't call anyone (I get the "unavailable" sound) and I doubt that anyone could call me. So is this how it's supposed to work, or (regarding Jolla), should I be able to call someone without choosing to prefer the 3G network option?

I confirm this on another Franch network : Free Mobile. I can reproduce it several times. In an area with 4G covering and strong signal (at least from the screen icon), I call my cell phone. No ringing at all. I go to the settings, set "prefer 3G", check that the phone is displaying 3G, call my cellphone again, immediate ringing.

I give a look to journactl, but didn't found anything myself :

• on 3G I have lines like that Jolla invoker[1366]: call: +339513xxxxx state: incoming 5
• on 4G, there is nothing similar.

I notice another characteristic, that when being in 4G even if there is no ringing on receiving call and nothing in the log about incoming call, the phone switch to 2G during the attempt. As soon as I hangoff on the calling phone, the Jolla switch back to 4G.

As a conclusion, I cannot use the 4G and set back the phone to 3G, hoping that Jolla team will have time to give a look. I'm eager to help as much as I can, I can test, send log, whatever. Sorry, this is not an answer but some complement of info to the original bug report.

Same here with Mobile Vikings (BASE) in Belgium. Sometimes I do not receive calls while 4G is on...

Still a problem with Mobile Vikings (BASE) in Belgium. Running 1.1.2.15. Calls received on 4G do not ring and redirect to voice-mail.

This is why Apple didnt "release" 4G for every country/carrier. Not all carriers support the needed 3G/2G fallback. Suppose you can look here for hints to wether you carrier is implementing this correctly.

I had the same problem - if I was on 4G and anyone tried to call me - it would go straight to voicemail.

Then, all of a sudden, since two weeks ago, I can now receive calls on 4G! My network (MTN in South Africa) must have changed / improved something, because I've had the same version of Sailfish all along - 1.0.8.19 (Tahkalampi).

And, before, I did test on 4G a lot, and it always went to voicemail.

Regarding Saunalahti/Elisa, they have admitted having issues in their 4G/LTE network-side implementation. They should cause exactly the same symptoms which you have experienced. Below you'll find their announcement (in Finnish). I recommend you to contact your service provider and request help, e.g. replacing your card if they think it helps.

If you don't mind, you could also post afterwards a comment about how they resolved your issue.

Thanks! I went to Saunalahti booth and showed that link from my laptop, and they gave me a new SIM card. I've re-enabled 4G now. I think they didn't have exact instructions to do so yet, but the guy decided to give a new one anyway. It started working as soon as I put it into my Jolla.

Two weeks later, no reported "no answer from you". I have daily calls and I'd been told if I wouldn't have been reachable.

is it also that you are not able to make calls when you have "prefer 4G" and you are in 4G coverage. I have experienced also that.

For your first problem, are you sure that you have a good 3G or 2G coverage for CS Fallback?

Hi @Sthocs , I think that the problem is kind of related, not sure yet. It is as if the phone, sim/network for example, would be temporary not available. Therefore the call goes to the voicemail, but for some weird reason, the voicemail doesn't give any feedbacks about this lost call.

As you said, in that case (person ends up on voicemail but doesn't leave any message), you usually get a simple sms. So I see no reason that sms would not be delivered once you get network coverage back (voicemail notification and simple sms notification are not the same).

Anyway, I think will maybe switch to "Prefer 3G" mode when I'm at work.
