What hardware/devices would you like to see SailfishOS on? [duplicate]

This article talks about that "You will soon be able turn your Android device into a Sailfish device"

Jolla pioneered the ability to use existing Android hardware adaptations with the libhybris project and the first Jolla device is built upon an Android hardware adaptation (but is not Android, just uses the hardware adaptation)

What devices would you like to see SailfishOS on - what chipset, how much RAM, how big internal storage, what resolution and screen size, cores and speed? .. and why?

If a device exists already as an answer, vote it up!

One device per answer!

Acer Iconia A1! I don't like Android so would love to use Sailfish in that too! :)

Droid 5, if leaks are true it should be very comparable to current Jolla (S4 dualcore, 1Gb RAM, 16Gb internal) but better screen 720p and HWKB

Should the title read 'Android-based devices'?

I see a lot of demand in the Answer section for Jolla (or nemo) Tablet. But before that happens, you must support landscape first. Please make it happen ;-)

I think this would be a nice improvement for the main Jolla website: allowing people to sign-up with their e-mail and current phone model they would wish to have Sailfish OS on. They could then be announced when Sailfish is available for their phone. I have friends who are interested in this.

Nokia N9. When it's no longer need it as backup for jolla. Why? It is physically smaller than jolla and display feels a bit nicer as well. But most importantly just to breath some life into it. New bugs are much more interesting than the old and known ones :)

Nokia N9 is not an Android Hardware Adaption device. Also there already exist ports of SailfishOS to N9.

Morpog ( 2013-12-28 17:26:00 +0300 )edit

These ports should just be a bit easier to install and update. I have an abandoned 64Gb N9 in my family and can't wait to get Sailfish in it.

A stable port would in fact be great (especially since the NFC could be usable, not stuck to The Other Half connection). Size is great too.

I love to breath some life into my N9, which was indeed damn expensive. It was a really good device, but it had way to many annoying bugs that weren't being fixed. Being able to put Jolla on it would make me very happy. :-)

i imagine it to give you a hard time with the edge gestures though...

With Jolla I always start edge gestures from the edge of the device although they only need to be started from the edge of display. So I don't think it will be a problem even with a device that has all-display front. If needed, some threshold for gestures can be added in the OS.

Samsung Galaxy Note III (or newer)

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 (or newer)

Samsung Galaxy Note Pro (12") [ I need this one ASAP :) ]

In short: 5.5" for phone, 10-12" for tablet, in both cases wacom-style stylus. Enough RAM for modern applications (for a mobile PC) and whole day battery life no matter what. Hardware keyboard on top of it would be perfect.

Disclaimer: I use SG Note II and besides crippled OS it is really nice hardware. I need Note Pro for working with real world documents, but there is no software that runs on it (Samsung crippleware excluded).

I do not know how SailfishOS would look on a tablet, but with some kind of tailing WM it could be usable.

Note 3 would be very nice. And it's relatively lightweight for the display size; the same weight as Motorola Milestone, and lighter than Nokia N900.

If I had to choose an alternative phone hardware, I would also take this one. Jolla is the proof that you don't need bleeding edge hardware, this one would be enough. It would make a cool development device :-)

hardcodes.de ( 2013-12-30 12:09:59 +0300 )edit

Doesn't the Moto G uses the same SoC as the Jolla phone? The moto G is quad core (Cortex A7) while the Jolla is dual core (krait 200 or 300?). Otherwise they use the same gpu and lots of other stuff is the same. I don't think it will be too dificult to get Sailfish running on the Moto G. In fact I reckon it will run without lots of modifications on most devices with Adreno 305 and SoC's from MSM8226 (Cortex A7) upto MSM8930AB (Krait 300) (Jolla phone supposedly uses MSM8930AA which is Krait 300)

Most of my friends have this phone. Its ultra affordable so running sailfish on it would increase a huge user base for sailfish which in turn would bring more developer activity.

Let's first start with the theoretical device, that I will call Jolla 2

Specs:

  • 4 cores, >= 1.2 GHz because 4 cores seems to be the norm nowadays, and 1.2 is quite nice. More cores also allows the daemons to work better and smoother the UI.
  • Decent GPU, don't know about GPU so I won't comment here
  • Enough disk (16 is a min, 128 nice)
  • 2 Gigs of RAM as a min, for multitasking with multiple heavy tasks
  • At least a HD screen. qHD is a bit small.

Features

  • Low power screen
  • Radio
  • The usual stuff (like a decent camera, a LED, good battery etc.)
  • Interaction with OH and project Ara (changeable optionnal components (keyboard, camera ?)

The lack of an LPM screen is the main thing that has me unsure about upgrading to a Jolla (apart from whether it'll actually work, that is). It's hard to contemplate living without the N9's always-active screen; I've even stopped wearing my watch because of it

keithzg ( 2013-12-30 16:56:43 +0300 )edit

even with OH fix, it need a real improvement on software over power usage screen/cpu improve battery life for use every day (not only standby mode 500h useless for smartphone but acceptable only for true classic mobile phone) https://together.jolla.com/question/14126/optimize-sailfish-with-mageec-project-which-profiles-and-generates-energy-efficient-code/

Z1 compact. Only compact 'flagship' phone with flagship features and hardware. Also, Sony flagship phones are the only ones available in worldwide markets (as opposed to Japan) that are waterproof (necessary for me and desirable for many others). Also, Z1 Compact has been outselling iPhone in Japan (top of charts) for 4-5 months, and has been a huge success worldwide since its recent launch.

Any idea if callrecording (finally) works on Xperia's?

manut ( 2014-02-25 13:22:12 +0300 )edit

I reckon if Sailfish ran on a Z-series (MSM8974 SoC, quad Krait 400, Adreno 330) then it'l run on all devices with this SoC, isn't it? This includes a few SGS4, Nexus 5, LG G2, many Lumia (e.g. Lumia 1520) & the entire Z-series. Provided that those other devices have unlocked bootloaders and can be rooted (which might be a problem on the Lumia's).
