camera lens replacement

Is there a replacement/repairkit available for the camera lens? My lens is totally scratched resulting foggy pictures only.

Same here, camera totally scratched = bad pictures. :/ I had a Nokia 808 PureView in daily use for more than one year as well as many other phones and I never had kind of this problems.

Jolla uses the very cheap and widely available OmniVision OV8825 camera module. The module has a plastic house that sits on top of it with the plastic lens guard (badly scratched in your case) .. unfortunately the module isn't available with the (Jolla) lens guard.

I asked care and the scratched lens is not something covered by warranty. So a good DIY repair method would be good to have.

I used toothpaste with a cottonstick to remove the scratched coating. The foto's are sharp again. only thing is that the camera now is more sensitive for false light from flash

Another possible workaround which I just tried and seem to work: put some crystal* sugar on the camera lens and rub it with some fine cloth for some minutes. Use something soft like a glasses wiper cloth. The sugar crystals will act as a sort of gentle sandpaper and will remove some/all of the violet film.

I can still see scratches on the lens, but the photos became clear again, tested it.

This is a SHAME for Jolla that they used such a low quality lens! I still miss the photo quality of my good, old N9. :(

*: crystallised, granulated, whatever it's called in English, I don't know the proper term. It's Kristallzucker in German, or kristálycukor in Hungarian, search for some photos if you're not sure. :)

English = It'll either be icing sugar or caster sugar - I would say 'caster' sugar, as that is purely granulated sugar, ground up to finer particles, so it can be 'cast', (dusted) over cakes/sponges/etc. Where as icing sugar has other additives like corn starch, so not as pure as caster and will contain different particulates, but could also be smoother - therefore, less abrasive.

I used alcohol included disinfection fluid to clean lens. I filled the lens fountain with fluid and let it be for few minutes. Then cleaned it with cotton stick and a bit of force and now camera pictures are sharp like Gillette. I´m not sure if the fluid damages something around camera if there is glue melting or something else. So far haven´t found any problems.

Thanks! This worked for me. Before this I had blotchy violet film clearly visible.

I had to use quite a lot of force, but now the lense is perfect. The lense is now so clean and smooth that I'm not sure whether the whole protection film has dissolved with the disinfection fluid and rubbing.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro SK17i lens is pretty close correct size. Maybe 0.1mm smaller than Jolla lens and little bit thicker. Just moved lens from my old non-working SK17i to Jolla and ah nice clean pictures again \o/ Part number for this lens is 1250-374.

Of course it's not recommended to do this and it will void your warranty.

I also had scratches and after a tip form James I tried Display Polish on it. This stuff: http://www.displex.de/index.php?id=135&L=1 . Worked.

So, how about the polish, does it remove the coating, as I'd rather keep it, since I suppose it serves a purpose (anti reflexion)?

[WIP] Preparing possible DIY solution for scratched lens replacement. I'll keep updating this answer when i found out something...

This is the damaged lens... which we took off, it can be done kinda easily with "correct" tools.

Tried to remove AR coating with solvent, but they only melted the phone plastics

I already started to look for suitable replacement part from ebay/aliexpress, but as these are identified as "for moto x, ipohne etc.", not by dimensions in mm, it was kinda tricky.

Ordered few possible candidates by looks for further inspections. And placed RFQ for one company for custom part.

Adding kapton tape to TOH as temporary lens/protection - blurred-seepia-photos :)

Thanks for that great post here. Do you have any updates? My lens-cover is completely scratched as well - never had that before with any phone & used them in rougher conditions. I'll probably try it with a screen polish...

Thanks so much for figuring all that out. I hope the polish will help. I wonder if some lens covers scratch easier than others, since not everyone has that problem. I don't remember having ever taken more care of a phone than this one, yet can barely take pictures anymore. Certainly something to improve for the next gen Jolla ;-)

Foggy pictures? Maybe there is chance, to get good pictures again, if only the surface is scratched.

I had the same problem, after my Jolla came back from display repair (this is an insolence, but another matter).

All pictures were foggy. I did not want to send it again, because the former repair took one month... I was really angry, until I visited a friend, who also has a Jolla. There I saw, that that the lens has a violet surface, which was scratched on my lens (and, that my lens is build in imprecise.....But no comment to that...Also another matter...).

I noticed, that it is easy, to rub of this coating with my T-Shirt. That simpleness explains the scratches...And what can I say, it worked. Now the lens takes good pictures again.

I took pictures, so that you can compare your lens with mine (my Jolla is the one with the white TOH).

Edit: But I have to say, that I consider, to send in the device because of the coating and the imprecise build in lens.

I do not know what antireflex coating is used on Jolla, but it just comes off extremely easy! I never (rub)clean it with something different than soft microfiber cloth and it had scratched all over! Another bad HW component used in Jolla. They need to revise everything BIG time for their second device. So far Jolla is the worst HW quality device I have owned since 1998. Sad, but a fact...

Why they add the violet layer :O? I got same problem and that is very easy to fix with polishing that away.

I assume this is the anti reflexion coating of the lens. Almost every coating has some "color" (my modern Nikon lens looks green, and older lens blue, and my old Kiron looks violet too). Some coatings are more "colorful", some are less. The color doesn't affect the image quality in a negative way. It shouldn't get scratched or come of that easily though. Well, the lens cover of the n900 definitely has some advantages (its coating is also violet, but without the nasty scratches :-) ).

I don't think, there's not even battery replacement on Jolla store. The only thing you can do now is send back for repair, or wait for repair kit to show up, if ever.

After a few tries with Displex, I can say it's almost useless. Lens is still scratched, and images have not improved, still foggy. Since replacement is now impossible, I will live with it.
