Hello,

I've had some problems with a couple Android apps and decided to reset my Jolla fully yesterday. The unfortunate thing is that I noticed afterwards that the backup made via settings includes only a small fracture of my data. How can I make a complete copy of my device, so that I could restore everything including all settings, sailfish/Android applications and history if (and when) I have to reset Jolla again?

Is there any way to make a complete restorable backup to my mac with help of ssh?

You can use dd in recovery menu to make backup of our whole emmcblk0p28 partition. With that you get full backup and restore of your applications and settings.

Or you can make btrfs snapshot of your working environment, and you can use that in case you need to reset back to your snapshot situation.

I like this idea! So I tried it today. But it is dangerous and a lot of stuff can go wrong! And in my case, something went wrong. So if you want to try this, too, please do not make the same mistake, that I did:

I only had an 16 GB microSD. Backing up jollas partition /dev/mmcblk0p28 needs 13,75 GiB. Putting an ext4 partition on the SD card, provides just a few MiB too less, in order to be able to write the jolla partition's data in a file on the SD card. So I decided to write the data of the jolla partition directly to the SD partition.

This went very well that far. But then, I did not leave the "Recovery Menu" as explained in Jolla's tutorial, but instead used option "#2 Reboot device".

I do not know, what exactly happened, but I guess something like this: The jolla OS started, discovered the SD card and tried to automount it. Unfortunatelly the partition on the SD has the same metadata (like UUID), as jolla's /dev/mmcblk0p28. So I guess something ugly in btrfs happend and both partitions got mixed up.

The results: Surprisingly I did not mention many erros. But I noticed:

The device does not shutdown any more. If you switch it off, it turns of the display, but the lower LED keeps shining red forever. (I waited 10 minutes)
After removing the battery and removing the SD card, my jolla phone booted up again correctly, but all of my pictures got one dead twin, showing "Could not load thumbnail", which could not be deleted any more.

At this point, I decided to restore the backup, I just created. Fortunately this worked well, as far as I can judge at the moment. ;)
