When I came home I was asked which connection should be used? 3G or WLAN? I never activated the 3G network, so why must I choose here? Or is the 3G always on?

If the device requires a connection and can't find a connection that is allowed to use (a previously saved WiFi or mobile data) then it will ask you "Where should I connect since I can't find anything known already?"

Jolla almost always asks me if I want to connect to WLAN when I boot the phone although mobile data is enabled in settings. I guess it's because it takes a few seconds for it connect to mobile? I just ignore the WLAN question by tapping somewhere on the screen.
