The status of chat accounts does not seem to be reliable at all. Despite my accounts being switched offline, I encountered them in fact online. This can also be verified by looking at the "world icon" in people/contacts app where all my chat buddies are being showed with some online status.

Switching the online status to "away" and then again back to "online" shows the correct status then. And only after that procedure it is possible to change the status to real "offline".

Disconnecting the phone from the network (e.g. by using flight mode) and reconnecting inoch t seems to change the chat accounts back to "online" although showing them as "offline".

Edit: Account types -> Google, Facebook, XMPP

I can confirm this bug, it first occured after the 1.0.8 update, a bit annoying regression. Has anyone found a solution?

From my experience: confirmed, played around with facebook and gtalk, Whatever Presence status I apply, People app has mind of its own. As being not offline in any accounts consumes additional battery power, it is annoying.

I have this problem as well. Although I have selected "offline" status for GTalk, People application persistently shows status for my GTalk contacts. Even going online -> offline again does not help any more with 1.1.0.39
