Extending the amount of cover actions has been discussed ever since the phone was released, and after reading peoples thoughts, here's my idea.

First of all, we do not touch the original two swipe cover actions as they are really good and easy to use. However, we replace the long press that accesses "closing the apps" -view. With the long press, the device opens up "extended actions" -mode which is navigated with a small move of your thumb. See the photo below. (Awesome paint skillz.)

Lets say you want to replay current track. First, long press Media app. Extended view opens up. Then move your thumb a bit to the left. Same lenght as you would using the basic cover action. Now you feel haptic reponse telling you you have hit the "next track". Then, you move your thumb a bit down until you feel another haptic and know you've hit the "replay current song" action. Now just release and that's it. The currently "chosen" action is also highlighted. I also think, by default, the actions on the right and left side should be same as the ones on cover.

Extended view

Came up with this while reading gukkes idea, thanks to him for that: https://together.jolla.com/question/3344/updated-my-crazy-idea-for-many-smart-cover-actions

Problems:

Closing down app or all apps would have to be within the actions, as we lose the orignal way of closing them. However, I think making the "close" action below all other would require enough moving to eliminate accidents. Also, "Close all apps" could be even one entry below (not in the picture).

Your thumb is blocking part of one action, so it's hard to see.

Here's the link to the photo if it doesn't show up. https://together.jolla.com/upfiles/13882631139899391.png (F5 a couple of times, the server seems to lag)

Current app closing feature is enabled by long press - release. Since your idea is based on long press - move - release, it is compatible with current implementation. You can have both.

@parasemic Didn't you like the part of my idea that fixed the thumb blocking? Apart from that, our ideas are identical except for how you access additional options (long press vs swipe), right? Then maybe the user could simply get to choose between them?

@gukke@parasemic IMO we must not be restricted to only to given cover actions and all the actions must be reached equally with one gesture. I think you both have great suggestions but gukkes is more fluid.

@jii Thank you :) I think this idea would suit some people, and mine others. Though I think that if Jolla would consider implementing any of this, they would favour parasemic's idea. BTW it would be cool to make a simple app for trying both of our ideas out and see how they stack up :)

Longpress action needs more time and thinking than just starting up the app and do whatever action is needed. Better change the UI of some apps to be more usable than to invent new gestures.

No way a 1-2 seconds of longpress is longer than opening the app and going through menus to find the action you're looking for.
