I open the browser first, then sign in to thecloud (A browser sign in public wifi) succesfully but the wifi shows an exclaimation mark on top of it on the home screen. there is no issue with the account, the wifi works fine on a windows phone. does it require a config file again?

I see this quite a lot, sometimes rebooting helps. Also, sometimes when the little wifi-with-exclamation-mark icon shows up, native apps will work fine but Android apps won't see the internet. Most of the time nothing sees the internet other than the web browser, which was perfectly able to log in.

For me, it won't connect to almost no browser-authenticated WIFI networks in Switzerland and France, thus no Wifi-internet on Jolla in most public Wifi hotspots :( I'd be happy to buy a new, more expensive Jolla if only this worked!

3 years later. In this hotel, every day on J-C I get 'complete action with' and a choice of Browser and Firefox. If I select the browser it appears to crash; anyway, it does not display a login screen. If I select Fx I get a certificate error on jolla.com (why?). So I close that, type 'example.com' and finally get redirected to the login page. On my Nexus Android tablet it presents a logon screen first time. I wish the Jolla could do that.

I have exactly the same issue, it's so frustrating and frankly embarrasing at times when others are connecting 'hassle free'. I wonder if 'X' is any better for this?
