[Bug] E-mail updating with no connection

I was able to replicate the following strange behaviour twice. Before going to bed i make sure to deactivate mobile internet + wlan. The next morning, before reconnecting the device to any sort of network, i see it received mails during the night on multiple configured accounts.
this clearly indicates, that it still was connected somehow. If so this is a grave bug!
Please let me know if you have experienced something simelar, or if you need additional information.

This morning i saw, that the mobile toggle was still of and i had three new mails. On the lock screen, the mobile indicator was active and i was able to surf. So its not only the email client, its just the mobile network being activated without my input and the toggle still showing it is off (as it should be).
I assume something activates the mobile connection over the night, what could id be? (Mail client shedule?) This is scary to say the least...
