I realise the Browser (and all other core apps) remains extremely basic at the moment, but perhaps the very simple option of adding DuckDuckGo (as a default option or manually) could be done.

Jolla claim to be for privacy and security, yet the default search engine is Google and the other two are Yahoo & Bing. All 3 collect and collate user data, personal information, search results and share all this information with a multitude of third parties (commercial and governmental). DuckDuckGo do none of that.

not a duplicate. one is for the more than one search engine, the other has a tinkered solution. an other one is released without the satisfaction to a ddg. then it's reopened

Sure, if you prefer to have a new question for every single search engine, instead of one for all of them. Not like there's any use in splitting it up like that, other than inflating the list of questions, but oh well.

no! i saw all are wether as dup or released, or with a tinkered solution. then i took just one of the dup and turn as non dup. better as all other which are unacceptable ;-)

Ahoi,

Openrepos has the "Search engines for Sailfish Browser". Works like charm, and never experienced any problem with that.

Cheers.

Edit: Oh, and better thank CodeRus for that, he has been the shiny knight of rescue many, many times for me since N9 was released. I'm sure he pretty well knows what he's doing.

So there is a workaround. Still no answer on why Jolla supports and promotes Google. See, I'd use Jolla 95% out of principle. If Jolla can't have faith in alternative solutions being equally good or better than the market dominating players how to ever change the status quo?

since duckduckgo has their servers in usa i dont see it as a viable alternative at all. i simply use the web search of my choice - which is metager - as browser startpage.

Isn't there any solid free and open source browser? Which could be integrated in SFOS.

I would suggest to use Qwant as a search engine instead of G... or even Duckduckgo. Totaly free, totally clean and respects private life. [https://quant.com]
