Osmand voice navigation: no sound [answered]

Has anyone managed to get working voice navigation in Osmand? The TTS data is installed, the language is selected (de-tts), and I tried all 3 options for voice output (like media/music, like notifications, like calls), but I can't get sound.

Is there anything I forgot to config, or is it a general problem with Osmand on Jolla?

Did you try just after a reboot?

@Fuzzillogic: Thanks. Any chance this will get fixed? Is there a text-to-speech framework on the Jolla in the first place?

@dthierback: This seems be be a rather similar discussion on this: https://together.jolla.com/question/19666/text-to-speech-tts-for-android-apps-in-alien-dalvik/ Strange though - I get voice output from google maps on jolla (but I don't know if it uses tts or prerecordings).

Android tts doesn't work on Jolla. I guess it's a play services thing, as is common for Android's "openess" these days. Prerecorded texts do work in osmand, be it somewhat limited.

In case anyone else is looking for how to switch to prerecorded voice data:

  1. Establish Internet connection, then go to "Settings", "Manage map files", click link "Click here to download...", tap on "Regular maps" at the very top, choose "Voice", then tick desired language(s) in section "Voice packs (recorded)", start the download.
  2. Afterwards, "Settings", "General", "Voice guidance" offers the downloaded recorded speech data for use.

Thanks, this worked perfectly for me.

Doesn't work for me on Jolla C with latest osmand from fdroid because osmand hangs upon first voice command. Is non TTS working for someone on Jolla C?

Note that the actual issue is missing TTS support in aliendalvik. See https://together.jolla.com/question/19666/text-to-speech-tts-for-android-apps-in-alien-dalvik/ for a fix and how to use TTS in OSMAND.

I never had issues with speech synthesis in OSMand and other apps (under AlienDalvik), after setting up a working TTS engine for Android: https://together.jolla.com/question/19666/text-to-speech-tts-for-android-apps-in-alien-dalvik/?answer=172280#post-id-172280

I have been using this successfully for years on my Jolla 1 phones.

For 2019 Instructions for non-TTS guidance (with images), please see:

https://boringphone.com/knowledge-base/osmandnavigation-voice-directions-set-up/

But essentially:

Open OsmAnd press the menu button on the bottom left:

Press ‘Download Maps’:

Scroll down and choose ‘Voice prompts (recorded, limited features)’:

Choose your preferred language and press the download button next to it:

Go back to the main menu, scroll down and select settings:

Select ‘Navigation Settings’:

Then select ‘Driving’:

Select ‘Voice Guidance’:

Select the language that you downloaded (It should be the one without TTS in the name):
