My earpiece died after switching from earpiece to loudspeaker for the first time during a call. My Jolla is roughly 1,5 months old. Thought it would be a SW issue, but even reseting to factory settings didn't fix it - earpiece is dead no matter what I do. Question - I feel it is a HW/component issue but has anyone experienced the same and got it running with SW updates?

did you upgrade to latest release? one thing you can try without further knowledge is the csd tool (care would ask you to do so too) call *#*#310#*#* and a testing software will start. you may also try to toggle between outputs loudspeaker>earpiece>headset>BT-headset>earpiece or something alike. Another thing might be that a chip is hanging in a specific state -> turn off your phone and remove the battery for a couple of minutes (>10min)

Upgraded Sailfish to latest available. Tried toggling between loudspeaker, earpiece and headset. Took the battery of for ~15min. Tried CSD tool. Couldn't get any sound from the earpiece. I guess this is a HW failure. I'll take it to care.

I had similar situation and it was hw issue. Optima Service fixed it.

I had hw issue just as WilbertS had. In fact Optima Service have changed the earpiece of my phone twice so far. Hopefully this third (original, 1st spare part, and now this 2nd spare part) will work fine. At least it had for quite long time for now. 1st spare part didn't work so long...

Yep, it was a hw failure. Component was changed and now working fine.
