Edit: Network is CYTAVODA. Should have mentioned that.

Been in Cyprus for a week now, returning back to the UK in a few days. Connectivity on the Jolla has been absolutely atrocious. Mobile data is barely usable. It constantly swaps between 2G & 3G even when stationary and in areas of good 3G coverage. Usually it will not reconnect to internet and has to be manually forced to do so once the phone has reacquired a data connection, either by switching mobile data off and on again or forcing connection (easiest way is through mitakuuluu). less frequently, the phone completely loses mobile signal (despite there being good coverage). as per the Jolla's (or Sailfish's) general problems with reacquiring network signal once it lost, it sometimes takes an eternity or needs to be switched into aeroplane mode briefly (manually selecting networks NEVER works and never has).

When it is actually connected and shows the symbol, the connection still constantly drops out or experiences huge packet loss and / or insanely low data speed (way lower than 2G). Again, often one is forced to disable it and re-enable it, or disconnect and then force connection through mitakuuluu.

I've tried my SIM in another phone and it works perfectly, another person's SIM has exactly the same behaviour in the Jolla ... whilst another phone (a BB Q10) has none of these connection drops or slow connectivity even on the same network.

The phone also gets ridiculously hot to the touch around the camera area, when it's freaking out, and battery drain is epic.

I can only assume that there is some kind of minor variation from the norm in terms of the carrier signal used by networks in Cyprus, and the Jolla / Sailfish freak out. Perhaps someone could shed some light on this?

Anyway, once again, I'm left with the impression that Jolla / Sailfish simply can't be relied on, still, when going away - I had a brick with me for over 2 weeks in Turkey, due to 1.07 fatally disactivating mobile data and mostly ruining wifi (1.08 unbricked it). Sadly, aside from still appalling wifi and reboots (solved with piece of paper and cleaning contacts), 1.08 and a trip to Finland (where it behaved), lulled me into a false sense of security and I didn't take a back up phone with me.

The fact that 10 months after launch basic connectivity is still so massively unreliable is completely unacceptable ... and wifi remains a bad joke.

Thanks for your report and sorry that you have experienced these problems.

It's hard to say what is the problem unless we have more information about the CYTAVODA network, do you know what kind of network band to they use? Or do you have any contact to the operator itself that can help us understand what is the problem.

[EDIT] tracking this internally now

Thanks for replying.

According to opensignal.com, "CYTAMOBILE-VODAFONE uses the GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / UMTS 2100 frequency bands for its network", which seems pretty standard to me. I can't tell you much more than that. I suspect they only disclose the intracasies of their network to phone makers (i.e. Jolla). If you want to tell me what to input in console or extract logs from, then I'll do that.

P.S. Perhaps you could tell me if manual network selection works in Sailfish / on the Jolla. Because I've never once been able to make it work, here or anywhere else. If I select anything other than what the phone prefers to connect to, it just says "Oops, there has been a problem with the connection."

GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / UMTS 2100 sounds like something we should be able to do and as we use Qualcomm SoC it should be also something that works mostly well anywhere. I could expect some bugs but not as bad as you are describing. So again I think we need to contact CYTAVODA for more info.

Re Manual network connection it does work, however that depends on the kind of agreement you have with your network operator. It is very common that certain operators have roaming agreements that they enforce by not allowing you to connect to any other network other than the ones they want. What is your home network operator?

@stezz pls also think of the possibility that this might not be specific for Cyprus. There have been reports of unsatisfying roaming experiences throughout the summer months here on TJC. I have to admit I had problems myself when I spent my holidays in Germany. Manual network selection almost never worked, data connection died after a while, had to go to flight mode and back... It was nothing I could put my finger on (happy debugging!), I was just glad I had a second phone with me - plus good Wifi coverage. So maybe it's less of a "What's happenig on CYTAVODA's network", but more of a general roaming issue that at least some are experiencing.
