Hi all,

Now that the Finnish summer heat has cooled down, we’ve been working very hard to finalize and polish our next Sailfish OS software update. We have great new stuff to deliver to you, and we’re almost there. However, we believe we need a few more weeks to ensure good quality especially since this is a major update including Qt 5.2.

Update on 30.9: We are at our 10th release candidate right now (internally) and still see some sharp edges. We need a bit more time to smoothen them out. In addition to stabilizing update 9, we are also testing the fixes to the security vulnerabilities (CVE-2014-7169, CVE-2014-6271 and CVE-2014-1568) and preparing to release them first if need be. Apologies for the long wait.

Best to make sure everything works properly than to rush a release just to meet a date. Thanks for the update, already eagerly anticipated the next update.

Qt 5.2, yippee!! This means official support for QTPositioning API, right?

Please release SDK update before releasing sailfishos update, as you stated dialog ui changes and possible regressions.

Thanks! Glad that there are also UI improvements.

Is there any chance in fixing the WLAN connection dropping bug in the next release? ( https://together.jolla.com/question/47764/bug-jolla-loses-wi-fi-connection-after-a-while/ )

Not convinced we have 'a few more weeks' this month ... ;-)

Good to see that the list of new stuff is short. That must mean that the list of fixed bugs is is very long! Please communicate also that!

@Vesa, sure. The list of bug fixes will be part of the release notes.

@Basil - releasing the SDK before the Sailfish OS update was considered, but I made the decision not to do it.

The two main reasons are 1) it's not convenient to install two separate versions of the SDK at the same time 2) you could only test your apps in the Emulator, since they could not be deployed to the device before the Sailfish OS software update is available.

If the SDK would have well tested support for multiple software versions, we would absolutely release it before the Sailfish OS update, but in its current state it's not feasible.

The SDK will be released hot on the heels of the Sailfish OS update.

Great, but please please please fix CalDAV and look into CardDAV, it's hard living with a non-syncing device these days... I'm tired of lugging a second phone around! Thank you ;-)

+1 to IZ1IVA, and I'm disappointed with more in this list. Still no progress with copy-paste in browser and Android? No 3 by votes for unreleased features, hello? I'll be pouting over my phone for another month. Very disappointed.

When will there be USB tethering available? (Or will it ever be made available?!!)

Vinodh ( 2014-09-14 07:13:24 +0300 )edit

And the People app and the basic Phone App takes a long time to load. If something as basic as dialling a number is going to take time, then there are some serious issues!

Vinodh ( 2014-09-14 07:15:04 +0300 )edit
1

@Vinodh possibly a stupid question, but what do you need USB tethering for, can't you just use wlan tethering?

2Ti ( 2014-09-14 12:23:44 +0300 )edit
3

2Ti, It might be a stupid question for you, but assuming that none would want USB tethering just because you don't want is plain dumb. WLAN tethering or Wifi tethering costs my battery lfie while USB tethering gives me the benefit of charging my phone while I am able to use my data plan from my carrier at the same time! Also my desktop does not have the necessary hardware to accept Wifi signals. So, USB tethering is very important to me.

Vinodh ( 2014-09-14 14:20:46 +0300 )edit
4

@Vinodh the desktop not having WLAN hardware is an understandable reason to want USB tethering - no need for name calling, like I said this might be a stupid question, thereby implying that there is probably something I am missing (like not having a WiFi card). I thus AM NOT assuming that no one would ever want it. I simply wanted to know why using the already existing WiFi tethering is not an option as it works pretty much the same way (bar perhaps some speed differences). The WLAN tethering also uses your data plan, and the battery issue is quite easily solved by plugging the phone into a charger socker, for instance somewhat ironically a USB port on the desktop.

These updates are all very well for the techies but what about about users, like myself, who aren't interested in the technical whys or why nots but simply want a phone that will do things that other phones (even Symbian) can do. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to me that with each update, something that worked before, doesn't work after. For example: MMS. Also why can't we have customisable options that allow text or background colour change, independent of OH choices. It's impossible to read text messages in daylight!

DavidJ ( 2014-09-15 20:29:13 +0300 )edit

Thanks for informing us of the delay. I'll wait patiently for the stable 9th upgrade.

WilliePre ( 2014-09-15 21:09:55 +0300 )edit

@DavidJ, no problem with MMS here... it sure has worked well since introduction.

The device's got all the time better. with just only one regression affecting me; the WLAN dropping problem.

juiceme ( 2014-09-15 21:38:13 +0300 )edit

@juiceme Yes there's some problems with MMS, where are the send and read notifications for MMS like on SMS (not for read)! I havn't seen any updade since introduction...

I would be very happy if the bugs with the automatically linked contacts is solved. Right now my adress book and contacts is a complete mess and I can't get out of it. Same thing happens with my wifes phone. You never know who really calls or sends an sms since the Jolla has its own judgement of what contacts belongs together and links them wildly. If two names are similar, Jolla happily links them, again, again and again. Regardless if you unlink them from each other Jolla force them back.

It is actually so frustrating that we could even abandon the jolla completely due to this, because it makes it quite unusable as a phone. It SHOULD be one of the most highprioritized bugs.

@Jarno Yes, Gecko 32 is available, but version 31 has long term support (the previous one was v24, the next one is v38).

Any idea when voicemail notifications working? This basic function has been around since before smart phones. I love my Jolla but have to carry 2 phones around because I need to know when I have a voicemail for work purposes. It's not a network issue as VM notification works perfectly fine on my N9 same network, same sim. My network does not provide the sms VM notification either. It's my main gripe at the moment apart from the WLAN dropping frequently. I do appreciate the hard work being put into improvements, people are generally impressed when the see my Jolla in action.

Jolla team is aware of this issue since january but there's no news about voicemail notifications... https://together.jolla.com/question/8779/no-notification-when-new-voicemail/#post-id-17093

TellienInTouch ( 2014-09-16 15:02:03 +0300 )edit

@TellienInTouch, oo, I never realized it exists! I use MMS a extensively, and I cannot remember having read notifications there... not even way back before, when I had a sybian phone. I had to go to a colleague and ask if his phone has this option and true, there it is!

juiceme ( 2014-09-16 22:15:12 +0300 )edit

@Larswad, do you have uncommonly high number of contacts, or how does this bug happen? Is this a generally known/reported bug or something happeded to you only?

I have on the order of 200 contacts only, and never have had any mixups with those...

juiceme ( 2014-09-16 22:17:44 +0300 )edit

juiceme: Thanks. No I have not so many, what could it be, a 50 or so. But I do have a few with similar names, Anna, Johanna, Johan and so on. The Jolla insists on linking them, regardless how many times and different ways I try to unlink them and separate them. I have now gone so far that I rename contacts into Jo-han-na and so on, and yet still the other day it linked together with Anna. This is only an example, it happens on my wifes phone to, but even worse. I believe it has something to do with google-synced contacts, but I can't pinpoint how. Its driving me crazy.

Here:

https://together.jolla.com/question/39786/bug-keeps-generating-new-globe-contacts-paarlampi-10516/

https://together.jolla.com/question/26236/bug-unable-to-add-contact-with-name-similar-to-existing-one/#37395

BTW, if useful info those contacts, each of them I have both as "regular phone contact" (originally imported as vcards over BT) and as a google contact. But I guess that's pretty common to have.

Larswad ( 2014-09-16 22:47:22 +0300 )edit

@Larswad@juiceme I also have the same linking problems. I see myself calling and texting to my self when in fact it is my wife. I've given here a nick name, but still Jolla digs up her name from facebook profile or similar and links the contacts back on. Also suspectedly the gmail sync makes dozens of identical contacts which get linked. This results in thousands of contacts, which might again result in call app and contacts get unresponsive and make the phone unusable. I broke the glass the other day. Makes me seriously think about choosing between getting the "glass touch panel" replaced for 210€ + waiting for 2 weeks to get my freezing ass shitty unusable Jolla back in business or getting a Korean/Chinese problem free mass market product off the shelf. So far, digging into release notes, there is no relief for these problems...which makes me wonder...

peinu ( 2014-09-18 10:43:15 +0300 )edit
1

@peinu: Yes it seem to duplicate my gmail contacts too, AND link them wildly, it just does so without even asking. Its devilish and quite the biggest usability problem with the whole device. If the basic phone function is flawed, every other aspect of having a smartphone falls to the ground. Accidentally breaking the glass with such a repair cost could easiliy be the reason to abandon it for good.

Yes, I am impatient as well, but I probably lack your way of thinking. They've announced _10_ days ago they need few more weeks, yet you are angry for no obvious reason.

One day we'll get basic functions like folder creation, being able to select destination for photos, being able to add personalised ringtones...

Maybe they're being saved for Jolla II

Maybe they'll never appear just to keep Jolla as "unlike" as possible

@Grunt: My guess is that they are very hard at work right now, earlier rleases has come very surprising and without any notice. I am also extremely impatient, but I guess it will come when it comes. Guess we shouldn't disturb daddy when he's concentrated on driving, it just makes him unfocused and mad.

Larswad ( 2014-09-30 16:03:34 +0300 )edit

Yeah, but if they promise to release the update in september then they should keep their promise. I know they still have time to release the update today, but if they have to postpone the release 'til the last hours of the month, it just gives the impression that the update might be unfinished. In that case they should just delay the release and inform well before hand that they can't keep their earlier promise.

@juiceme, not yet. Official support for Qt5.2 specific APIs are pending multi-version support in Jolla Store. We are working to bring this out as soon as possible.
