Hi all,

Now that the Finnish summer heat has cooled down, we’ve been working very hard to finalize and polish our next Sailfish OS software update. We have great new stuff to deliver to you, and we’re almost there. However, we believe we need a few more weeks to ensure good quality especially since this is a major update including Qt 5.2.

Update on 30.9: We are at our 10th release candidate right now (internally) and still see some sharp edges. We need a bit more time to smoothen them out. In addition to stabilizing update 9, we are also testing the fixes to the security vulnerabilities (CVE-2014-7169, CVE-2014-6271 and CVE-2014-1568) and preparing to release them first if need be. Apologies for the long wait.

Best to make sure everything works properly than to rush a release just to meet a date. Thanks for the update, already eagerly anticipated the next update.

spetsnaz ( 2014-09-12 13:52:17 +0300 )edit

Qt 5.2, yippee!! This means official support for QTPositioning API, right?

juiceme ( 2014-09-12 13:57:13 +0300 )edit

Please release SDK update before releasing sailfishos update, as you stated dialog ui changes and possible regressions.

Basil ( 2014-09-12 14:00:41 +0300 )edit

Thanks! Glad that there are also UI improvements.

kt ( 2014-09-12 14:10:20 +0300 )edit

Is there any chance in fixing the WLAN connection dropping bug in the next release? ( )

juiceme ( 2014-09-12 14:19:41 +0300 )edit

Not convinced we have 'a few more weeks' this month ... ;-)

strongm ( 2014-09-12 14:37:23 +0300 )edit

Good to see that the list of new stuff is short. That must mean that the list of fixed bugs is is very long! Please communicate also that!

Vesa ( 2014-09-12 14:45:11 +0300 )edit

@Vesa, sure. The list of bug fixes will be part of the release notes.

bijjal ( 2014-09-12 15:12:27 +0300 )edit

@Basil - releasing the SDK before the Sailfish OS update was considered, but I made the decision not to do it.

The two main reasons are 1) it's not convenient to install two separate versions of the SDK at the same time 2) you could only test your apps in the Emulator, since they could not be deployed to the device before the Sailfish OS software update is available.

If the SDK would have well tested support for multiple software versions, we would absolutely release it before the Sailfish OS update, but in its current state it's not feasible.

The SDK will be released hot on the heels of the Sailfish OS update.

no word on shared google calendars :(

Thanks for sharing the info, hoping for a great and polished update then :)

simo ( 2014-09-12 15:36:22 +0300 )edit

Thanks for the update. In the mailing Gecko 31 is mentioned. Isn't 32 already available?

Jarno ( 2014-09-12 16:07:38 +0300 )edit

Great, but please please please fix CalDAV and look into CardDAV, it's hard living with a non-syncing device these days... I'm tired of lugging a second phone around! Thank you ;-)

IZ1IVA ( 2014-09-12 20:54:06 +0300 )edit

Can't wait for it! :)

torcida ( 2014-09-12 23:20:29 +0300 )edit

+1 to IZ1IVA, and I'm disappointed with more in this list. Still no progress with copy-paste in browser and Android? No 3 by votes for unreleased features, hello? I'll be pouting over my phone for another month. Very disappointed.

bennypr0fane ( 2014-09-13 17:18:16 +0300 )edit

When will there be USB tethering available? (Or will it ever be made available?!!)

Vinodh ( 2014-09-14 07:13:24 +0300 )edit

And the People app and the basic Phone App takes a long time to load. If something as basic as dialling a number is going to take time, then there are some serious issues!

Vinodh ( 2014-09-14 07:15:04 +0300 )edit

@Vinodh possibly a stupid question, but what do you need USB tethering for, can't you just use wlan tethering?

2Ti ( 2014-09-14 12:23:44 +0300 )edit

2Ti, It might be a stupid question for you, but assuming that none would want USB tethering just because you don't want is plain dumb. WLAN tethering or Wifi tethering costs my battery lfie while USB tethering gives me the benefit of charging my phone while I am able to use my data plan from my carrier at the same time! Also my desktop does not have the necessary hardware to accept Wifi signals. So, USB tethering is very important to me.

Vinodh ( 2014-09-14 14:20:46 +0300 )edit

@Vinodh the desktop not having WLAN hardware is an understandable reason to want USB tethering - no need for name calling, like I said this might be a stupid question, thereby implying that there is probably something I am missing (like not having a WiFi card). I thus AM NOT assuming that no one would ever want it. I simply wanted to know why using the already existing WiFi tethering is not an option as it works pretty much the same way (bar perhaps some speed differences). The WLAN tethering also uses your data plan, and the battery issue is quite easily solved by plugging the phone into a charger socker, for instance somewhat ironically a USB port on the desktop.

2Ti ( 2014-09-15 14:52:32 +0300 )edit

These updates are all very well for the techies but what about about users, like myself, who aren't interested in the technical whys or why nots but simply want a phone that will do things that other phones (even Symbian) can do. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to me that with each update, something that worked before, doesn't work after. For example: MMS. Also why can't we have customisable options that allow text or background colour change, independent of OH choices. It's impossible to read text messages in daylight!

DavidJ ( 2014-09-15 20:29:13 +0300 )edit

Thanks for informing us of the delay. I'll wait patiently for the stable 9th upgrade.

WilliePre ( 2014-09-15 21:09:55 +0300 )edit

@DavidJ, no problem with MMS here... it sure has worked well since introduction.

The device's got all the time better. with just only one regression affecting me; the WLAN dropping problem.

juiceme ( 2014-09-15 21:38:13 +0300 )edit

@juiceme Yes there's some problems with MMS, where are the send and read notifications for MMS like on SMS (not for read)! I havn't seen any updade since introduction...

TellienInTouch ( 2014-09-16 08:49:54 +0300 )edit

I would be very happy if the bugs with the automatically linked contacts is solved. Right now my adress book and contacts is a complete mess and I can't get out of it. Same thing happens with my wifes phone. You never know who really calls or sends an sms since the Jolla has its own judgement of what contacts belongs together and links them wildly. If two names are similar, Jolla happily links them, again, again and again. Regardless if you unlink them from each other Jolla force them back.

It is actually so frustrating that we could even abandon the jolla completely due to this, because it makes it quite unusable as a phone. It SHOULD be one of the most highprioritized bugs.

Larswad ( 2014-09-16 12:13:05 +0300 )edit

@Jarno Yes, Gecko 32 is available, but version 31 has long term support (the previous one was v24, the next one is v38).

nodevel ( 2014-09-16 14:01:26 +0300 )edit

@nodevel Thanks for the info, that makes perfect sense.

Jarno ( 2014-09-16 14:03:53 +0300 )edit

Any idea when voicemail notifications working? This basic function has been around since before smart phones. I love my Jolla but have to carry 2 phones around because I need to know when I have a voicemail for work purposes. It's not a network issue as VM notification works perfectly fine on my N9 same network, same sim. My network does not provide the sms VM notification either. It's my main gripe at the moment apart from the WLAN dropping frequently. I do appreciate the hard work being put into improvements, people are generally impressed when the see my Jolla in action.

sugaryenigma ( 2014-09-16 14:50:16 +0300 )edit

Jolla team is aware of this issue since january but there's no news about voicemail notifications...

TellienInTouch ( 2014-09-16 15:02:03 +0300 )edit

@TellienInTouch, oo, I never realized it exists! I use MMS a extensively, and I cannot remember having read notifications there... not even way back before, when I had a sybian phone. I had to go to a colleague and ask if his phone has this option and true, there it is!

juiceme ( 2014-09-16 22:15:12 +0300 )edit

@Larswad, do you have uncommonly high number of contacts, or how does this bug happen? Is this a generally known/reported bug or something happeded to you only?

I have on the order of 200 contacts only, and never have had any mixups with those...

juiceme ( 2014-09-16 22:17:44 +0300 )edit

juiceme: Thanks. No I have not so many, what could it be, a 50 or so. But I do have a few with similar names, Anna, Johanna, Johan and so on. The Jolla insists on linking them, regardless how many times and different ways I try to unlink them and separate them. I have now gone so far that I rename contacts into Jo-han-na and so on, and yet still the other day it linked together with Anna. This is only an example, it happens on my wifes phone to, but even worse. I believe it has something to do with google-synced contacts, but I can't pinpoint how. Its driving me crazy.

BTW, if useful info those contacts, each of them I have both as "regular phone contact" (originally imported as vcards over BT) and as a google contact. But I guess that's pretty common to have.

Larswad ( 2014-09-16 22:47:22 +0300 )edit

@Larswad@juiceme I also have the same linking problems. I see myself calling and texting to my self when in fact it is my wife. I've given here a nick name, but still Jolla digs up her name from facebook profile or similar and links the contacts back on. Also suspectedly the gmail sync makes dozens of identical contacts which get linked. This results in thousands of contacts, which might again result in call app and contacts get unresponsive and make the phone unusable. I broke the glass the other day. Makes me seriously think about choosing between getting the "glass touch panel" replaced for 210€ + waiting for 2 weeks to get my freezing ass shitty unusable Jolla back in business or getting a Korean/Chinese problem free mass market product off the shelf. So far, digging into release notes, there is no relief for these problems...which makes me wonder...

peinu ( 2014-09-18 10:43:15 +0300 )edit

@peinu: Yes it seem to duplicate my gmail contacts too, AND link them wildly, it just does so without even asking. Its devilish and quite the biggest usability problem with the whole device. If the basic phone function is flawed, every other aspect of having a smartphone falls to the ground. Accidentally breaking the glass with such a repair cost could easiliy be the reason to abandon it for good.

Larswad ( 2014-09-18 11:40:09 +0300 )edit

This FInnish summer is very long! We are at the end of Semptember and nothing happened! I'm fed up

michdeskunk ( 2014-09-22 10:34:43 +0300 )edit

@michdeskunk Fed up? In never fails to amaze me how people take things for granted :) I don't mind if Jolla postpones it till November to ensure greater quality. Yes, I am impatient as well, but I probably lack your way of thinking. They've announced _10_ days ago they need few more weeks, yet you are angry for no obvious reason.

nodevel ( 2014-09-22 23:34:37 +0300 )edit

I don't understand what all the fuss is about, after all we're talking about a firmware still in beta.

...oh wait...

IZ1IVA ( 2014-09-24 15:20:57 +0300 )edit

Any chance to also have a full image to reflash? You know that a multi step online update every time we do a factory reset is not a great solution... please!!

T0mu ( 2014-09-27 16:40:05 +0300 )edit

Not a great solution, but recovery image in my phone was updated when my phone was sent to Optima for repair.

jarnose ( 2014-09-27 17:16:57 +0300 )edit

One day we'll get basic functions like folder creation, being able to select destination for photos, being able to add personalised ringtones...

Maybe they're being saved for Jolla II

Maybe they'll never appear just to keep Jolla as "unlike" as possible

Cosmic_Kakapo ( 2014-09-28 16:36:21 +0300 )edit

? can create folders, add personal ringtones...

torcida ( 2014-09-29 12:17:50 +0300 )edit

So, any news of the update starting to roll out to users?

Grunt ( 2014-09-30 15:21:40 +0300 )edit

@Grunt: My guess is that they are very hard at work right now, earlier rleases has come very surprising and without any notice. I am also extremely impatient, but I guess it will come when it comes. Guess we shouldn't disturb daddy when he's concentrated on driving, it just makes him unfocused and mad.

Larswad ( 2014-09-30 16:03:34 +0300 )edit

Yeah, but if they promise to release the update in september then they should keep their promise. I know they still have time to release the update today, but if they have to postpone the release 'til the last hours of the month, it just gives the impression that the update might be unfinished. In that case they should just delay the release and inform well before hand that they can't keep their earlier promise.

Grunt ( 2014-09-30 17:13:57 +0300 )edit

My excitement from 1-5 where 5 is the maximum :)

1 changes to the forward and backward indicator glow
1 Accounts framework has undergone a fair amount of unification
2 App dialogs have been redesigned
1 Search support in media player (good that it is beeing fixed)
1 Copy unsaved numbers from call log (good that it is beeing fixed)
1 Finer control to enable/disable AGPS assistance
2 Automatically save draft emails on page exit (good that it is beeing fixed)
1 Fix to a bug which caused camera to overwrite captured media (good that it is beeing fixed)
1 Simplified startup wizard flow
2 Improved Homescreen performance and Sailfish application memory use
3 Browser engine update to Gecko 31
2 Fix to WLAN disconnect issue while roaming due to RSN IE mismatch (good that it is beeing fixed)
2 Internet interface MTU resized (good that it is beeing fixed)

Hope some of these are fixed

I still think that system wide C&P is the missing feature...Hope it will be introduced soon.

magullo ( 2014-09-30 18:16:31 +0300 )edit

What is C&P?

Larswad ( 2014-09-30 18:20:15 +0300 )edit

copy and paste

MacManus ( 2014-09-30 18:21:19 +0300 )edit

ah, yes, Missing here and there. But yesterday I pasted an url into the Terminal, copy taken from the webbrowser. I was a little surprised because I thought that wouldn't work with fingerterm (or was that complaint for pre-Tahkalampi?), but well, obviously it works now.

Larswad ( 2014-09-30 18:27:52 +0300 )edit

If it's not today, all I'd like to see is Jolla informing their users about it, and maybe sharing a new schedule

simo ( 2014-09-30 18:39:52 +0300 )edit

it does not matter if it takes alittle bit longer, i am sure they are doing a good job!

pmelas ( 2014-09-30 18:59:37 +0300 )edit

@simo: Yes that what I said too, we have be informed if there's any delay. But I think that informing about delay after the supposed release date is just plain wrong, and it isn't any better if the info comes during the day there was supposed to be an update. What I'm trying to say is that they should not raise too much hype for things if they aren't going to inform about us about possible delays and problems. I have supported Jolla during the whole year I've been using their phone, but especially this case of Younited being an android app just pisses me: if that had been informed well before hand instead of letting the people expect that there would be a native app, there wouldn't be any feeling of being let down.

Grunt ( 2014-09-30 19:00:11 +0300 )edit

My understanding is that "Uitukka" release was delayed due bash's shellshock vulnerability.

penpen ( 2014-09-30 19:22:48 +0300 )edit

they said it would come this month. Not many days left!

dsilveira ( 2014-09-30 19:33:03 +0300 )edit

And couple hours ago they said that it won't come today.

HarhaanJohtaja ( 2014-09-30 20:03:37 +0300 )edit

Thanks for the update! It arrived in the last hours, but glad you shared, now patiently waiting again :)

simo ( 2014-09-30 22:21:04 +0300 )edit

Well, this is exactly the kind of situation I was talking about earlier: instead of update we get delay announcement about two hours before the supposed deadline. Couldn't they see this coming any earlier? The fact that I've been sick all day and have had nothing else to do other than waiting this update might get me a little too frustrated, but still I think it should informed well beforehand if there is any delay...

Grunt ( 2014-09-30 22:49:16 +0300 )edit

@Grunt: Life's a b*atch ;)

tortoisedoc ( 2014-09-30 22:57:30 +0300 )edit

My guess? updates 9 and 10 together.

magullo ( 2014-10-01 10:21:41 +0300 )edit

No point in sticking to artificial man made deadlines and releasing defective code. Complex software systems are no respecters of scheduled release dates. It is just a question of waiting patently or not until it is ready:)

richardski ( 2014-10-01 17:12:12 +0300 )edit

Some estimate or aproximation date, or I have to check every half hour in case the update is already here? Please, have mercy!

dmelamet ( 2014-10-01 21:48:55 +0300 )edit

only this poors fixed after 3 months??? -_-

michdeskunk ( 2014-10-02 12:52:19 +0300 )edit

A lot of users don't receive notifications when they have a new voicemail, this should be priority number one:

baptx ( 2014-10-04 14:10:15 +0300 )edit

I don't understand why you guys would get so upset about the notification of delay coming in a few hours or even 1-2 days later or earlier. Let's be honest. I wait for the update as something I look forward to, like getting home and having a delicious chocolate cake waiting on the table, baked by someone who really knows how to make the best chocolate cakes around. I keep waiting for the cake to be ready, I get home and dammit, no cake. Well, that's certainly a disappointment. Just don't be like little kids about it (I myself did partake in that concert a little bit when waiting for the Jolla itself to be delivered - at christmas!). Nothing reeeeeeeeaaally important depends on this update's arrival date, like you're gonna lose money, fall sick, your friends will hate you for it or anything, am I right? It's just that ... waiting for the chocolate cake. Be strong, we can do it!

bennypr0fane ( 2014-10-04 15:04:53 +0300 )edit

I don't want any stinking chocolate cake. Where is the update?

Larswad ( 2014-10-04 16:38:50 +0300 )edit

@baptx official policy is to give priority to the most voted-for features here on TJC. That issue already has a pretty high number, so I'm sure it has Jolla's attention. You could try and attract attention to it in other Jolla forums and linking to it in similar TJC-threads where appropriate. However, many users (like me) don't miss this feature because they get sent a notif. sms by their mobile carrier upon incoming voicemail.

bennypr0fane ( 2014-10-04 17:58:04 +0300 )edit

@bennypr0fane Seriously? The most voted-for features are not the most important. So if I understand, if the Jolla phone couldn't send SMS, and if the number of votes is small, nobody in Jolla team will work on this feature! If I knew that, I'll never bought a Jolla, I only want a phone with at least the features of a basic mobile phone, that's not the case...

TellienInTouch ( 2014-10-06 17:40:37 +0300 )edit

Update available now!!

Vinodh ( 2014-10-06 18:52:20 +0300 )edit

a hotfix is not an update!

pmelas ( 2014-10-06 18:57:40 +0300 )edit

Sorry, my bad! My Jolla showed that an update was available and I got excited that Uitukka was finally available!

Vinodh ( 2014-10-06 19:06:31 +0300 )edit

@Vinodh, change this answer into a comment?

ssahla ( 2014-10-06 21:30:36 +0300 )edit

@bennypr0fane – "official policy"? I'm not aware of Jolla ever stating that the most voted issues will be top priority. Correct me if I'm wrong. I think the vote numbers are just giving information to Jolla about what the users would like to see, but they're not making priority decisions solely on that.

(On the other hand, @TellienInTouch, if Jolla couldn't send SMS, I'm sure that question would be the most voted here.)

ssahla ( 2014-10-06 21:37:18 +0300 )edit

@ssahla I think you're right, it's just an example and it wasn't the case with MMS feature :)

@juiceme, not yet. Official support for Qt5.2 specific APIs are pending multi-version support in Jolla Store. We are working to bring this out as soon as possible.
