My mum has been asking to me install the flight radar on her Jolla phone but I can't get it to work. It installed, but then doesn't seem to do anything when run and gives an option to upgrade the full version. I've tried the Yandex and Apotide store versions. Has anyone had any success?

Success! Using http://www.jollatides.com/2014/04/03/updated-installing-google-play-on-jolla/ I have installed Google Play, then using mum's existing account with Google I was able to reinstall the FlightRadarPro app that she had already paid for from her Galaxy Tab 10.1. Unfortunately GPS wasn't working in the android apps (FlightRadar couldn't tell where I was), but I installed KillDroid and restarted the android system using that and now it is working. I used putty/ssh to connect to the phone via wifi from a Windows box to do all the above. It was a lot quicker than using the built in terminal!

Completely anecdotal but Play Services sometimes has great difficulty getting the GPS (I found this with 4sq and Swarm); it may do it with regular Android apps (i.e. those that don't rely on Play Services) as well but in the mean time what works for me well, is this:

  • launch HERE maps, let it get the geolocation

  • launch Google Maps

  • launch (in my case, 4sq or Swarm).

The last rely on Google maps, and that doesn't seem to trigger the GPS all the time. Having the native map app open first sorts that out and then means the other apps don't used cached/out-of-date data for location.
