Pre-install Jolla essential applications before shipping

asked 2014-10-02 10:30:57 +0300

Hello,

After 2 days with my Jolla phone, I'm still unable to install any applications. I succeeded yesterday to install the Jolla essential, but the phone died immediately after I succeeded and I had to use Telnet to resuscitate it. I'm also expecting a response from Jolla care on that issue.

My suggestion is that all the Jolla essential Apps should come pre-loaded on the phone, especially on the African market. The internet connection is not alway available everywhere and to everybody, so it becomes a pain to buy the phone and only be able to sms and make calls after 2 days.

I found it very nice to decide which applications I want to install and which not. But I understand your point of view. If you have a bad internet connection it's for sure quite painful to install all the essential apps. So mabe it is better to deliver the Phone with the apps preinstalled. But please not in that way that they are not uninstallable.

@Fellfrosch Exactly. When Jolla announced that you can choose your apps; I thought for a minute about it, and could see the freedom they were offering. However, I feared that with slow connections in some parts of the world that could be an issue. Most of the developpers are in countries with high bandwidths, or invest in high bandwidths as they need it for their job. This is not the case for everybody...some just want to Whatsapp and send a few emails, and don't have the bandwidth needed to install at least the essentials.

I agree that it would be nice to have an alternative way of receiving both applications and OS updates. (Speaking of updates: If you believe that installing a application from the store was a pain for you to go through, wait for the first OS update you install. Those updates ar huge.)

In principle I believe that not having all kinds of add-ons pre-installed is a perfect decision; why would I install, say, Exchange support if I never need it?

A final question though: If internet access is as slow as you say and not always available... What do people do then with smartphones? I'm just curious because everything I do on this phone depends on reliable internet connectivity; opening a news site will load more kB than installing a small app from the store. Then there's YouTube, mail attachments, cloud services, chat, ebooks, .... I wonder why I would buy a smartphone in the first place if I couldn't use all these services because of bandwidth issues. What are the typical use cases for you? What's the regional difference that companies need to take into account in terms of how people use their smartphones?

You can use a Smartphone offline. And to be honest despite the fact that I normally have a good internet connection. I try to have as many things offline as possible. Things like Maps/Wikipedia/Music. Why? Because there are still al lot of places where The internet connection istn't that fast. Even her in Germany. And on the other side I don't like to have my Data elsewhere.

@Fellfrosch: Wikipedia's online, isn't it? Maps are, too. (Or both work offline only if massive amounts of data are downloaded; the OP can't even download a few kB) Most people get their music online.

I do believe that there are good use cases that require a Jolla (or some Android smartphone) and can't be covered by an internet enabled feature phone with lower CPU/RAM/screen specs... That's why I ask. I think it's an interesting topic that isn't covered normally.

Preloading the apps is the cheapest solution. An alternative would be to send a memory packed with the essential apps. The memory would be a nice bonus for the buyers in that market too. Added storage is nice.
