10 months ago I asked about the possibility to implement global search for Jolla phone (see here).

@Aard from Jolla has worked on this feature for the N9 in Nokia and commented that such a feature "would be doable" and suggested the following:

"I guess we should collect yes/no/what?! for that feature, together with information about which content the people who are using it are searching for to see if it makes sense to start with implementing search for a subset of items more easily available."

There are 3 possible answers to this question:

  1. Yes (I think such a feature would be useful and I would like it to be implemented)

  2. No (I don't think such a feature would be useful)

  3. What? (I don't understand what such a feature would do)

Please vote for one of the 3 suggested answers and give comments about the content you would search for with such a feature impelemented (or did search for with a prior phone that had this feature, like the N9).

EDIT 31.10.14. 12:53 CET:

  1. Yes votes: 58 (80,55%)

  2. No votes: 12 (16,67%)

  3. What votes: 2 (2,78%)

@Aard any suggestions on how to improve this poll or does it answer the need for information about this topic?

@Twinklestar1792 Please delete your answer and vote for the already existing answer "Yes" (as suggested in the post) and comment in the comment section of that answer. Thanks.

So, what is the result? Have SFOS have got Global Search (like in Nokia N9)?

And how can I lift this question/suggestion up to the most recent topics?

Posting this answer lifted the topic, but that's not the good way to cast your vote for features. Just go to the appropriate feature request and click on the up arrow. So Jolla can see the interest for this when (if) they have free time for new, less urgent features.

I have already voted for this feature as you suggesting. Unfortunately I have only one vote. And even 262 votes (currently) seems not to be enough to bring attention to Global search request.

i never used this on N9 or on Windows or Ubuntu

@mgbler is this because you simply never tried? Or because you dislike the feature?

@Fuzzillogic dislike would be to much, i just don't use such a feature although i tried it. But this is perhaps because i don't have a huge collection of files and the few ones i have are stored "canonical". My vote doesn't show dislike or disgust at all, it just represents people without need for such a feature... but, having sth is better than needing sth ;~)

@mgbler search isn't just for finding files. I hardly use it for that. I do use it to start applications, open chat sessions, find mail, etc. Even if canonically stored, typing is often faster. This is true on mobile as well.

@Fuzzillogic i believe you, and i think the majority (5:1) agrees. It's interesting to see how people use their devices differently. There are certainly situations when this function comes handy - maybe for the majority.

I'd use it the same way I do on Windows 7, general system-wide search for all kinds of files possible.

i just sorted through album art using Search in Windows, finding and removing old .db files, .wma's, duplicates, etc.

I think it would be a handy feature, albeit most of the time I know where stuff is that I've installed or created.

It would work well the way it is implemented e.g. in GNOME (3): it lists all your contacts, all files tracker can track, all your installed applications, and more such things, every application can also decided to make its search index whatever available to the global search, but most importantly: you can select which things you don't want to see when you search!

I noticed @virgi26 also mentioned this in the original thread: https://together.jolla.com/question/1286/search-global/?answer=58539#post-id-58539

I'm just concerned about the use of Tracker (I hadn't a good experience with it on GNOME).

An other part of @Aard's comment: "Security for the aggregated content would be manageable as well if only the search application itself has access to it."

I would like to be able to search in all kinds of files: music, notes, videos, photos, contacts etc etc. and it should be fast :)
