Remember? Formerly (don't remember which SailfishOS version), I could zoom in and out easily (without pinching) after double tap within the native browser. Was this functionality removed? Or should I restore it with some secret setting?

I haven't tried 1.1 yet, but for me the Browser in 1.0.8 is frequently unusable and the worst iteration yet. The zoom / input loss / looping crashes / individual tabs ceasing function and requiring restart of app are absolutely terrible.

I'm using 1.1.0.39. I can double tap to zoom in on most webpages, but selected images are a no-no, they have to be pinched. Some webpages respond to double tap after the page has been pinched-to-zoom.

@objectifnul: Huh?

(citing you from the comments to the answer)

Actually, my question was not enough accurate: what I meant is that formerly, I could zoom in an out continuously, moving my stylus up and down (at 45°) after double tap. Currently running Sailfish 1.1 and this gesture doesn't work any more.

No, this continuous zoom gesture used to work with one finger too. Disappeared unfortunately. Couldn't remember which Sailfish version.

This sounds very much like the moving cursor gesture - I can zoom in the browser address field, but that gesture doesn't work in the web page ...

(then again, I'm also not able to mark any web page text - not now (Sailfish OS version 1.0.8.21), not previously - and I'm grateful for any pointers on how to achieve that ... if it's at all possible?)

... were you maybe using some OpenRepos add-on?

It still works for me and always has, so the function was not removed if that answers your question.

Which version of Sailfish are you on? I'm on 1.1 currently.

Woah, wait, what? That's possible?? I'm using 1.0.8.21. In the native browser, I can double tap for a small "smart zoom in" or I can pinch to zoom in as much as I want. Is there another way to zoom? Does it require a stylus?

How did you find out this gesture even existed? Cant recall reading about it anywhere... Maybe it was something the Mozilla guys tried out with a specific build Jolla used but never officially implemented?

Discovered by chance (which makes sense: if you don't need to learn a gesture, it's probably a good idea). Well, maybe that was a Gecko feature indeed. And perhaps it was removed for some patent issue.
