Hi all, I'd like to start developing an application for my Jolla. In the future, when I'll decide to publish the app, why should I use openrepos or Jolla store? What are the main differences ?

If possible, please use Jolla store. Higher reach, some sort of checks, should work with firmware updates more reliably. Warehouse is the second best option.

Jolla store is installed on every phone. For openrepos, user has to install Warehouse app or download the apps install packages separately and install them.

Users also need to enable "Allow untrusted software" in settings, which for some people is not what they want to do.

Openrepos is more a testing place, for development and holding place until more of the API's are permitted for use in Jolla store.

As a developer, I can also say, that currently I get much more feedback on apps, that are on jolla store. That's because users can not vote or comment in warehouse - the openrepos jolla app.

Interesting point of view. Are there main differences on the requirement of the application to get published on openrepos or Jolla store ?

Yes. Openrepos is selfpublished, with no check and no special requirements. It's build on trust on reputation. Jolla store on the other hand, has a couple of requirements and restrictions on api side.

I would suggest to aim to have your application published on Jolla Store, as it's the official repository, and apps have to pass some QA.
However, you may need to use some API that is not (yet) allowed for store applications. In that case begin by sharing your app via OpenRepos.

In the OpenRepos Warehouse, users can install software without having to authenticate - much like most software managers for normal Linux distributions. I use both the Jolla store and the OpenRepos Warehouse: core software (including updates) from the Jolla store, and other apps from the OpenRepos Warehouse. I don't really like the idea of telling Jolla which software I install.

What guarantees do you have on open repos not tracking that? EDIT : This is not meant to be a critique against open repos btw, but it is a honest question.

I haven't checked the network communication from the OpenRepos Warehouse app, but that could be interesting to do. However, the risk of information leakage is there for all software you install - not only app stores. If you care about privacy and information leakage, one natural step would be to eliminate the obvious risks, such as the concept of connecting software downloads to a user account.

If you plan to develope, chance is that (unless you rely only on core libraries) you will be forced to rely in OpenRepos for distribution. This is not a bad thing per se, from a statistical perspective, as OpenRepos can track download stats as well. On the other hand, Harbour has QA gate before it, which is extremely helpfull in improving app quality.
