Otherwise it's a bit of a problem when device is locked while you are driving and it takes at least four taps and a swipe to see directions again. Touching your phone while driving is also illegal in some parts of the world such as [I've heard] California.

The ideal solution sure would be more intelligent, e.g. Google Maps-like that can dim screen (but not lock it) when you are on a long section of the route and bring it back to full light when you close to making a turn.

@redge73 is that an answer? @Artem actually in android it does lock, except that the nav is shown above the lock, which means that if i want to drag down that status bar to see a missed call, i have to put into background, unlock, check who called, then reenter the running nav

@AL13N I definitely remember this Google Maps behavior with clever dimmin-undimming from somewhere (it impressed me a lot so I remembered), but I switch phones regularly... maybe it was Google Maps on iOS. Useful (and as for me very impressive) feature anyway.

@Artem it could be android, i only saw maps on a 2.3 and it handled like that.

It's not just droids that do this. I have an old Nokia C6-01 with Nokia Here maps and during navigation - especially driving - the screen will turn off completely until like 10 minutes before the next turn when it turns back on and usually says something. I agree that this is extremely useful.

I think the issue here is that we don't have proper turn by turn navigation yet...

Yeah, that could be it :-)

Getting a proper turn-by-turn would have been great, but it's for longer future and even "maybe", while just not turning screen off when showing directions would help me already tomorrow.

true, though i'd rather them spend time on the nav than the show directions... except that afaik apello makes the maps (and thus likely the nav too)

After update 10 the maps application keeps display on when the app is in foreground and tracking current position.

Unfortunately that does - at least for now - apply to show directions view. As a workaround while driving you could connect the phone to a car charger and use settings -> system -> display -> "keep display on while charging".

Is that workaround a 1.1.1.27 option only? I can't find it in 1.0.8.21 (which I prefer)

@Roundhouse: The toggle in the settings ui is available >= update9. But the option itself has been there from the start and can be manipulated also in older releases from command line:

  • mcetool --set-inhibit-mode=stay-on-with-charger
  • mcetool --set-inhibit-mode=disabled

To install mcetool, run "pkcon install mce-tools" as root.
