Thanks for the comments and answers folks. It's back up and working now without a factory reset; though I'm not completely sure I know how it happened. In case it helps anyone else, here's what I did (as best as I can recall).
- Tried to enter recovery mode, as suggested by @Markkyboy. Unplugged the charger (which had been plugged into the mains, not USB), removed battery.
- Moved charger lead from mains plug to USB port in preparation for recovery mode.
- Re-inserted battery whilst holding down the
volume down
button. - Pushed & released the
on/off
button. - At this point the phone buzzed momentarily then went blank. And I mean momentarily - was blank before I could even get the charger lead plugged in.
- Plugged in the charger lead. Nothing.
- On laptop (linux) ran
ifconfig
in the faint hope it might show up as an ethernet device per factory reset instructions. Nothing showing.
At this point I gave up and resigned to contacting Jolla (in a foul mood I might add). Then got distracted by other things and so left the phone sitting there plugged in to the USB port for ~15mins.
When I came back to the laptop I noticed the LED was white - and the power cycling had stopped. Furthermore, pushing the on/off
button briefly showed the charging
message.
So I left it alone until fully charged then switched on and....it worked! Thus far everything seems to be fine. So a tentative sigh of relief.
I'm hoping that's it - and I'll now be paranoid about not running out of charge. But Jolla, if you're listening:
You need to fix this
This is a battery-operated device. Batteries run flat. That should not brick the phone! Like everyone else here, I really want to see you succeed. And I similarly enjoy seeing enhancements to Sailfish. But you need to sort your priorities out. Preventing a phone from bricking - where the only advice is a factory reset via telnet - is not a tenable position. You need to fix that above Sailfish eye candy.
At the very least you need a big warning in red letters that says "whatever you do, DON'T LET YOUR BATTERY RUN FLAT!".
My personal opinion: to go for a full reset, which will mean you lose all data.
Alternatively, wait for answers from others who may have a different approach, but usually for a Jolla stuck in boot loop, then Jolla Recovery via Telnet is usually the way forward.
There are a few guides here on Jolla Together, either one will help you restore your phone.
Here's the Jolla Zendesk guide for resetting Jolla phone https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202208763

qUAp ( 2014-11-07 12:19:31 +0300 )editBut are you able to enter in the recovery mode? Because it might not be possible if your battery is totally drained: see here, the guy had to buy a wall charger: https://together.jolla.com/question/48622/goodbyeno-wait-hello-again-jolla/
Sthocs ( 2014-11-07 12:26:32 +0300 )edit@qUAp@Sthocs: suspect the problem was indeed lack of juice from charger - even though using the (Jolla-supplied) mains adapter. Plugging into laptop USB was part of solution, see answer below.
