When writing a message (im/sms), the screen does not display the recipient's name. Before hitting send, you might happen to still remember picking the right contact for this message content, and the conversation might contain messages for context. Or, it might be the case that you're not quite sure, and that there is insufficient context.

This happens if you enter the message writing screen by tapping on a message in the message list, or via contacts. If you use "new message" from the messaging menu, then you do get to see the recipients.

(The message entry sometimes shows the recipient name when blank, but that's not useful later after time and/or distractions in between.)

It turns out there is the contact card if you swipe left, but given sailfish ui conventions, you'd be silly not to think that wouldn't send the message. (There's no upper corner label during the gesture saying anything about sending, so maybe it doesn't ;) Alas, not a good time of day to verify that from here.) Anyway it would be more straightforward to see the recipient name directly in the conversation view at the time of sending.

Did you updated your jolla ? v1.0.2.5 release no problem, or did not fully understand your issue. Did you have step by step ?

Yes, using 1.0.2.5. Find a contact with mobile number or im account and select send message, start writing message. I don't see the recipient name on the screen at that point (at least firstname and nickname aren't showing up).

Testing with 1.0.2.5. When i start to write a message, I can select one or multible recipients and when I come back the screen where I write the message I can see the recipients. However it will display the first name only. Last name it leaves out.

Ah, true — if you go through messaging -> menu -> new message, then you do see the recipients while writing. Edited to reflect that

The recipient full name (and nickame) should be made visible and displayed in the top-right of the converstation view (preferably so that it will not scroll away).

Well, I don't know,, but using 1.0.2.5 using the messenger app showing an ongoing SMS conservation the contact does not show up in the top-right of the conversation view...?

immo ( 2014-01-05 21:41:06 +0300 )edit

Yes it doesn't, that's why I wrote (and edited) it that it should be made to be visible there..

This isn't the "answer" we are hoping for, but it is a sort of "workaround"...

I've gotten into the habit of holding the "send" button and dragging left to see the recipient's avatar. I then release the screen and tap "send". When a message has been entered, the contact's page will sort of pause as you drag the screen to the left so just the avatar is visible. It's almost as if the developer's intended it to be used this way as a quick check, which is why I'm adding this as an answer.

I sent an SMS to the wrong person twice in one week, but this little habit has prevented me from doing that again since then. :P

In the future, I hope the Nokia N900 chat window layout is adopted. Can't make a mistake with that! :D

One more thing that couls be ugraded: when Pulling Left to check the contact card, the avatar is on the left side and the name on the right side of the contact card. But usually the Avatar is not filled, therefore the name should be on the left side and the avatar on the right side in order to be able to see the recipient name easely when Pulling Left, no?

What about contacts without avatars, or just random unrecognizable images? I would prefer/suggest that the recipients name is pinned on top of the conversation. Also there's room for improvement about showing the type of message/conversation. But that's discussed in another topic. :) EDIT: Actually just noticed/learned/figured out that the last type of message is shown on the botton right corner just below "send". :)

Displaying avatars is a nice idea, but clearly not enough to solve the problem. Adding avatar for all the contacts I text to would be a PITA.
