Hi all ye sailors!

Unlike Nokia N1 which uses a 64 bit Processor but does not make proper use of it, can the jolla-tablet have a 64 bit processor with 4GB RAM?

ok, thanks to androide, that everyone thinks now that the bigger the better o_O why do you need 4gb? Games? play heavy games on PC or PS4. Stop promoting quantity over quality If you could execute desctop apps on that, then probably it would be a good idea for x64 and 4gb ram or more.

Yes we do, if we want high profile games to appear aboard. Or anything else that's not just focussed on consumption - video/image editing...

64-bit kernel with x32 userspace would make sense. Lower memory usage than 64-bit userspace without losing the benefits of x86-64 (16 64-bit registers).

In an interview with Sami Pienimäki, it was told that the hardware can not be altered anymore, it is the software-side they receive peoples requests for. I think we shouldn't clog up TJC with wishes considering tablets hardware.

Link for the interview, unfortunately in finnish: http://www.iltasanomat.fi/digi/art-1288774669985.html

In short, hardware cannot be altered, but company receives wishes considering software development and how tablets technical capabilities are used.

The Intel processor that probably is used (Atom Z3700 series), which is more specifically probably the Z3735F, does only allow max 2GB RAM with DDR3L-RS according to the datasheet. So this modification is not possible unless a different CPU is chosen.

If aiming at 4GB RAM, the (cheaper) Z3735F, which is Type 3 SoC according to datasheet, has to be exchanged to a (probably more expensive) Type 4 SoC, and then the 2GB DDR3L-RS has to be exchanged for 4GB LPDDR3, because 4GB is only possible with LPDDR3. Not only is the higher capacity more expensive, but also LPDDR3 is more expensive per GB.

So I assume that overall, the increase in cost might be quite significant. I am not sure if that even would be possible in principle within the budget limitations.

I want to maximise offline capability with maximum storage. Don't forget this is an Intel processor which historically eats RAM. This may not be completely true the way these Atom processors are used, but don't forget we are comparing not with todays tablets but google/apple tablets which will be out in 6-12 months time and typically Jolla devices have to last much longer before replacement than the competition.

Jolla Roadmapping Meeting - Friday 16.01.2015

Thank you for your contribution to the Jolla Tablet project!

We receive a lot of ideas and suggestions, which we are grateful for, but all of them can't be implemented. We've reviewed your idea and unfortunately it is not something we can implement, at least right now.

However, we will keep all suggestions, and might revisit this decision in the future if we see an opportunity to implement this feature-request in an upcoming product/SW release.

Best regards,
The Jolla Tablet Team
