What GPU will be used in the Jolla Tablet ? The Nokia N1 tablet released yesterday uses an x86 Intel CPU like the Jolla Tablet and has a PowerVR GPU. Will the Jolla tablet also have a PowerVR GPU or something else ?

I'm asking because PowerVR GPUs are notoriously closed source (see the Paulsbo disaster), which might not be issue for Sailfish OS itself if the drivers provided by the manufacturer works fine, but might be an issue for any third party distros (Nemo Mobile ?) or users who don't want to run binary drivers.

As the tablet should start shipping in May I think there might be some hope for a Intel inhouse mobile GPU design that IIRC should start shipping next year ?

Yes! Intel HD-Graphics with open mesa driver would be awesome!

No PowerVR, thanks! The Poulsbo platform was indeed a disaster, and it is not until this year when there is rudimentary 2-D acceleration support in the linux kernel.

I'm betting it uses the PowerVR GPU unless they've somehow got access to pre-production Intel Cherry Trail chips, which are Atom chips running an Intel GPU. I really doubt that, though. I'm hopeful that it'll be Cherry Trail, but the realist in me says it'll be the same chip that's in the Nexus Player: the Atom Z3560.

The GPU is fairly performant, but it doesn't exactly have great (or really any) open-source driver support. I would hope with Jolla's commitment to open source there'd either be a new open-source GPU driver for the PowerVR G6430 or Jolla would go with the new Intel chips that should be released in Q1 2015.

Apparently someone from Jolla said on IRC that the GPU should be Intel based. Hope it it means an actual Intel designed GPU with open drivers. :) Link to the post:

since it has DDR3L-RS and not LPDDR3 memory it should be a SOC of the Z37xx Series (Baytrail) not Z35xx and those have intel gpu. But we can still hope for cherry-trail :)

According to Intel, the Atom 3700 Series will be used.

Intel states in its 36xx/37xx Datasheet that the GPU is Intel Gen7.

To clarify, that's Bay Trail, supported by the open-source Intel driver in Mesa.
